Oh it is...I was totally picture some backwoods hillbilly that never flew before, now that I know who it is, I'm just shaking my head.

I'd be PISSED if I was on the flight and lost some of my vacation.
so they related to the Barra MacNeils ?

I really don't know if they were hammered or not. I'm assuming they were, but that still doesn't justify their actions. Apparently they're going to tell "their side" of the story once they get home. Can't really understand what that would be...they're wrong, end of, imo.

How long were you in CB? We're lucky...it's a great area. LOVE the Dancing Goat and Charlene's, 2 of my favorite places. So you were in Whycocomagh and Margaree, did you go through Mabou (where these people are from) and hit The Red Shoe?

why bother diverting the flight?

I bet you that anybody on the plane would rather put up with the smoking than to have to miss going to their destination.

stupid on all parts it seems.

This is why all airlines ban smoking and take it seriously especially on short haul flights..

If this was a 14 hour flight I could understand someone needing a nicotine patch or gum but less than a few hours.. If they can't stand that kind of flight without a smoke then don't fly..

Air Canada Flight 797 was a scheduled trans-border flight that flew on a Dallas/Fort Worth-Toronto-Montreal route. On 2 June 1983, the aircraft developed an in-flight fire behind the washroom that spread between the outer skin and the inner decor panels, filling the plane with toxic smoke. The spreading fire also burned through crucial electrical cables that knocked out most of the instrumentation in the cockpit, forcing the plane to divert to an alternative landing field. Ninety seconds after the plane landed and the doors were opened, the heat of the fire and fresh oxygen from the open exit doors created flashover conditions, and the plane's interior quickly became engulfed in flames, killing 23 passengers who were yet to evacuate the aircraft.

As a result of this accident, many regulations were implemented around the world to make airplanes safer, including the installation of smoke detectors, emergency lighting leading to exit doors and increased fire fighting training and equipment for crew members.

That was not my point

I don't want to sit on a plane with people smoking either

But the damage had already been done. The flight was well on its way. Arrest them when it lands at the destination.

Also another reason probably there should an air marshall or somebody on the flights that can hand cuff them to their seats for the duration.

I would rather tough out another 3 hours or so on the plane and get to where I am going than to have to get off the plane, stay in a hotel overnite and then continue on the next day. But that is me.

But then again it might not have been a non stop flight and or there are regulations that demand the plane be defumed. Seems like some common sense was left on the tarmak

That must have been Cheticamp you were in, Acadian village...very cute spot. The Keltic Lodge IS ridiculously expensive. I worked there wen I was in college, could never see why it was so pricey. There's some great camp grounds all over the trail, great cottages too...I love that area.

I guess I'm derailing my own thread..oops.

Back on the smokers, it was reported that they're going to tell their side of the story when they get home...should be interesting. She's had enough time to come up with some ridiculous lie that will paint her as the victim (in her mind)...that's just the way she is.

I understand but from what I have been told hey were quite defiant and a fire hazard was present. No Airline wants a plane down and to have to put up all the passengers for one night due to idiots but what if fire had caught in the cabin like the Air Canada Flight I mentioned earlier who would have been 1st on the being sued list ?

This was common sense to be safe..

According to Sunwing Vacations spokesperson Daryl McWilliams, the passengers' behaviour when confronted by passengers and crew, "went way beyond uncooperative."

And besides their defiant attitudes, McWilliams told CTVNews.ca the three refused to say where they had stashed their spent cigarette butts.

"Not knowing where they were disposed of prevented us from checking whether they had been extinguished properly," McWilliams explained in a telephone interview Monday.

The combination of unruly behaviour and the fire hazard posed by potentially still-smouldering cigarette butts hidden somewhere on the plane made this a "very, very serious infraction," McWilliams said.

As a result, the flight was re-routed to L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda, where the fuel-laden jet was forced to make an overweight landing.

That meant a Sunwing mechanic had to be flown to Bermuda to conduct a structural inspection of the plane, McWilliams said, in addition to a separate search of the passenger cabin to find the discarded butts.

By the time those searches could be conducted, McWilliams said the plane's crew had exceeded their allowable duty time, necessitating an overnight layover.

As a result the airline had to pay for the plane's nearly-200 passengers and crew to spend the night in Bermuda Friday, as well as put up the passengers stranded in Punta Cana by the delay.

Sorry I don't buy the smoldering butt argument Francis. Airlines banned smoking on planes for one reason and it was not the fire hazard. I could be wrong but I don't recall a plane ever going down due to a cigarette when they did allow smoking.

I think you have a couple things going on. Some jerks that think they can do as they please and airline staff that is power hungry. I will bet ya that the crew had no clue how to handle this. So instead of dealing with drunks who would not listen they decided to set an example.

Don't get me wrong. The smokers were the problem. Just saying I doubt the crew handled it in the best manner. And that could be due to the fact they had already logged a lot of hours if they had to stop work due to hours in service and could not work the extra hour or so it would take to land and remove the passengers. I would be curious how long it took from the time they decided to abort the flight to the time they landed. I am gonna guess at a minimum it was a half hour. Plenty of time to determine where the smokers had been and to look for the butts. Which since they smoked in the bathroom as I recall likely means they got flushed down the toilet.

We shall just have to agree to disagree on how this was handled.
