My niece's pc is suffering from this virus. I've tried what little I know, but it is very restricting. I can't get into her security controls, I cant get her online. The anti virus program she uses needs to be updated, since I can't get it online I can't get the update needed to get the program to work. I looked up the runtime error I'm getting when I try to pull up internet explorer and its runtime error 216. They say it's a symptom of the virus mentioned in the title. I can't seem to find a way to get behind this thing. Any advice would be awesome. I'm thinking about a clean swipe, but I don't want to do that unless I absolutely have to. Thanks.

Can you find a specific fix for the virus and download it to a USB drive, then upload it onto your niece's computer?

sounds like its more than a virus i'm afraid, what ever it is it has probably copied itself into every system file on your pc by now anbd if you cant get the latest av definitions for a reputable av program you will have no chance, if your using norton anti virus or mcafee then they deserve a virus imo lol if you try to fix it yourself you will need to access the registry and if you've never been here before DON'T lol you can do some serious damage in here

Clean wipe its gonna have to be

system restore wouldn't help Ian...be nice if it did.

But i'm going to have to agree with control right now and say it'll take less time to wipe it clean and start fresh then it will to fiddle with it. ....and because of the type of virus it is I'd suggest wiping right down to zeros and rebuilding from there, so long as you have the disks for it.....and make sure you have the drivers....dells are bad for driver issues.

no no no!

a wipe is the last resort.

iffn you can, boot into safe mode (but choose safe mode with command prompt from the F8 screen); when prompted, type the following:

Code:
sfc /scannow
press enter.

make sure you have the installation media (xp cd) with you.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe)

if that does not work, try the recovery console (not sure what options are available)

if that does not work, then use your last resort (wiping it)

This seriously wont help lol

make sure reformatting will actually fix the problem

Cause it will, wipes the whole hdd, formats it and re-installs the os, sometimes can cause more problems than it solves but in this case will solve :)

He just need sto make sure he gets all the drivers he needs for his hardware reinstalled too

If the system won't boot to the os you need to boot from something else like a cd try avast Bart or hiren's then scan the drive. Once you get your files off then you need to restore it.

If you cant get into the OS the you'll need a live CD with and OS such as DSL (dam small linux) use this to get your important files then wipe :)
