I've got this new spyware program that I want to install, but it says I need to uninstall all others first. I thought I had, but it still detects the McAfee that came pre-installed on my computer. I checked a couple of other places on my computer, and they have it still installed, just turned off. The only place that doesn't list it is on the Add/Remove programs screen. So does anybody know how I can get rid of it completely?

Nope. It didn't work. Tried the first idea the first time, Tried the link for the software twice, and there aren't any folders under program files.

What spyware program are you trying to install anyway?

I find a good one to be SpyBot Search & Destory. I don't believe you'll have trouble installing that with remnants of McAfee on your PC.

I HATE McAfee with a passion. I was NEVER able to fully remove it from my win98se machine. It left legacy apps all over the place and integrated itself into the operating system. It was only by trial and error that I was unable to remove most of it.

Get a free app. titled HiJackThis and run it. It will show you where McAfee files are hiding and you may be able to remove most of them from the startup menu at least. I never could get rid of Oil Change that came with the McAfee Suite and it never worked properly -- everytime I removed it, my comp wouldn't boot properly.

I'm waiting for the newest version of Ad-Aware (which hasn't gotten a very high rating) but it has worked well for me on the XP machine. LitSoft is now coming out with the 64 bit version so I can run it on my Vista machine. You might look into the program as well.

What spyware program are you attempting to install?

Good Luck!
