So I was reading a F1 blog and saw this. Fantastic example of sportsmanship.
All seven races of the 1956 included multiple driver entrants. That year’s season ending Italian GP at Monza saw probably the most famous example of seat swapping, as well as one of motorsport’s best shows of sportsmanship. Coming into the race, Fangio held an 8 point lead over Ferrari teammate Pete Collins. The Argentine, however dropped out of the GP early on with a broken steering arm.
With a win and the 9 points that came with it, Collins would be able to take his first WDC. However, when Luigi Musso, also in a Ferrari, refused to follow team orders and hand his car over to the championship leader, Collins took it upon himself to do just that, essentially handing the title to his teammate.
When questioned about it later, Collins simply stated that he was still young and that he had plenty of time to win a championship in his own right. He would not, as he lost his life at the German GP less than two years later.
