I live in a sleepy little Alabama town. The whole state is consummed with football every Fall. High School and College Football are king in Alabama. We don't have our on pro team unless you count Alabama & Auburn. Anyway it is high school football championship week. Our local high school is going to the 6A championship game Friday Night again. We won the championship in 2006, 2007, & 2008. We have been to the championship game at least once or twice since, we did not make it last year. They just announced all the county school will close at 1pm Friday so everyone who wants can travel to the game in Tuscaloosa. Seems there were a very high number of teachers and students who were not going to be at school past that time anyway.

I love football as much as anyone but I believe it is overemphasized here when education is so much more important than sports.

I wish our community would back our high schools and kids that way.. You barely see 25 to 30 parents ( usually 1/2 of the teams parents ) at the games at that level..

I don't see an issue it it's only one game a year. Perhaps they can trade it for one of those Pro-D days our school take here monthly ( teachers day off ).. My kid is out of school at least once a month due to those days.

Friday night during football season it is an event when we have a home game. Everyone who is anyone is at the game. 3,000 is a sparse crowd. During rivalry games they bring in extra bleachers. Not sure the stadium capacity.

In our town it's Junior Hockey. We have a very good Junior Hockey team that usually wins Regionally. I learned the Canadian Anthem when my first husband was an off-ice official going to so many games.

Though we do have a Private Catholic high School that can afford to buy a lot of good players and usually does very good in Basket ball. But having gone to a poor high school on the wrong side of the tracks, I had to hate the prep school so I can't root for them you know ;)
