After editing about 130 photos (lots of thumb clicking) for some family pictures in March, I'm noticing some persistent soreness in my right (strumming and clicking) hand, from my thumb to my wrist. It's not sharp but it does not seem to be going away and it's a noticeable dull ache. Playing guitar does not seem to aggravate it as much as using my thumb to click my mouse. I spend a lot of time on the computer, but have done so for the last 20 years or so.

I'm going in to see the Doc at end of month, but in the meantime, has anyone experienced this? Does anyone know if there are exercises/stretches that will allow someone with this condition to work out the problem? It could be some kind of tendinitis or carpel problem. It definitely has something to do with repetitive actions. Might it not be a good idea to just wait until it goes away? I assume there is something that can be done for this short of surgery? Thanks! smile.gif

Just try to stabilize it and not move it. It's probably just a sore muscle. You might be able to tilt your wrist in all four directions to stretch it out some.

Thanks guys and gals. I am going to see the Doc. It makes me wonder if this is a repetitiv wrist injury, how I should be stretching without aggravating the condition? Panacea what part of your hand was injured and what kind of stretching did you do?

Great response Maulds! :clap

The muscle/tendon running down my palm was injured, and I just tried to bend my fingers back towards the top of my wrist to loosen it up. Never went to the doctor of course :p

I think you must be right as you said its related to repetitive movements that it can carpal tunnel

If swollen: ice
pain: rest, immobility, Ibuprofen, splint at night. If you have ace bandage wrap your wrist with it.
Exercises: Repeat as tolerated
1) picking up marbles or small objects e.g. pick up with thumb and index- alternate all other fingers with thumb (Transfer items from one bowl to another)
2) With your thumb ( on affected wrist) touch the 4 finger tips on that same hand
3) wrist rotation ( clockwise and counter clockwise)
4) bending up and down/ move side to side
5) rolling a tennis ball with your palm ( stationary don't release)
6) squeeze a stressball or any ball

Hope you feel better soon :)

Thank you. I'll try these. In my guitar forum I was sent this:

I've been doing this for a couple of days a couple times a day and it appears to be working. :):)
