Software to convert AVI to MPG

So what I have a are videos taken from my video camera that are 720x480 avi files and they are HUGE. Pretty much useless to be able to be viewed other than on my PC.

Is there a good (free would be even better, but not necessary) piece of software that would let me convert them. Being able to edit them a little would be nice too, but that may be beyond my abilities.

Well I use a couple of pieces of software, none of them are free but they are cheaper than some options

Pinnacle Studio is for editing and can even make final DVD's and files...


for file conversion and down sampling I use: Total Video Converter -- AVI to MPEG Converter, Convert Video Youtube FLV to MPEG Converter,AVI to DVD Converter,AVI to DivX Converter
