Over here in England the're introducing a ban on smoking in pubs, in May. I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on this? I am a smoker and am in favour of the ban. It's my choise to smoke and I think everyone else deserves the choise to decide whether they want to breathe in my smoke or not. I don't smoke in the house as my missus is a non smoker and dosen't want to breathe in my smoke.
However, recently I was in a village where nearly all the pubs were completely non smoking and I didn't really like this as I was tired and didn't really fancy standing outside in the pouring rain to smoke a cigarette. I am thinking now that though I agree with the ban, maybe pubs could provide adequate and fairly comfortable shelter outside the pub for smokers.

The Navy does something along those lines. They have dedicated areas where smoking is allowed. They are almost always covered or enclosed in some way as to allow all the smokers shelter from the elements whilst they are destroying their lungs. I definitely approve of smoking bans. There is nothing worse than going to a restaurant and breathing in other people's smoke.

I love the idea. Some city's around here have adopted it. Some companies wont even hire you if you are a smoker, because it knocks their insurance claims up etc.

They're doing that in Allen County here as well. Any public bar or place is going to be forced to disallow smoking on their property. The amount of councilmen and proprietors that are against it really is overwhelming. We'll just wait and see what happens. I think it's rediculous that the county is trying to infringe on my right to excersize a legal activity in a place where I can go to knock back a few and have a cig along with it. All these health nuts who rarely go to bars are behind it in the first place.

Here in Lowndes county we have a smoking ban as well. You cannot smoke in restaurants, public places, or bars/clubs...ect. I think its a great idea for restaurants.. but for bars, its alittle much.

James is correct though. I don't think the bans should cover bars. I think it should only cover places where children will be like at restaurants or in malls.

I wouldn't care if like the bowling alley I bowl at disallowed it, hell they already do on certain days/times anyway. I just don't understand why it covers bars... a place where these health nuts will come get plastered and then try to drive home... but heaven forbid they hurt their precious lungs.

Here the law allows it in bars. If a certain % of the income is from alcohol sales then smoking is allowed.

we have a ban throughout nj and ny... and as a smoker, its a pain in the ass.. i understand why it shouldnt be allowed in restaurants where people are eating, but bars is kinda going overboard

anyone who smokes knows you smoke double time when you drink and having to go outside is a friggin pain in the ass

on the other hand, its kinda nice not to come home smelling like an ashtray...

Here, we just have smoking and non smoking sections.

Not in bars or restaurants, we don't (at least in Ontario). It's also restricted on some outdoor patios, even, although I have yet to meet anyone who would tell me to put it out on a patio. It's fairly recent (May), but it hasn't been so bad. I understand the reasoning for it, and since it's my choice to smoke (I don't HAVE to, and I never HAD to start) it's only fair that I'm not going to jeapordize anyone else's health by doing it. It's a little bit chilly in the winter, but I don't see it being so much of a problem. More motivation to quit then, eh?

The Smoking ban just went into effect here the first of July, No resturants, bars, bingo halls.. no anywhere inside basically.. The only exceptions are Cigar bars and casinoes.

Plus you are not allowed to smoke within I5 feet of any entry way.

And while I have no problem not being able to smoke in most these places, I still think it is stupid to make it illegal in a bar, I mean I know a dozen people that only smoke when they drink. and while stepping outseide or on the patio is one thing in the summer.. I know the bars here will be hurting come the cold weather.. might as well just have the party at home, at least then you can enjoy yourself.

the only that really bugs me about the law, I pay my taxes just like the non-smokers, but I am the one who keeps losing rights.

The thing you have to worry about is people just getting there booze from a carry out and drinking it at home more, could lead to domestic violence to increase. Im sure in somewhere like Scotland domestic has incereased since the ban up there as people cant be arsed to have to go outside in the cold (and lets be honest, scotland is damn cold) so drink inside and twat there wives.

Alcohol is a massive problem in the UK, we are always told to look at the european countries like france and belgium who drink but not get trollyed. To be honest with the culture of binge drinking in the UK this will never happen. Although maybe the introduction of a smoking ban in pubs will not make smoking so socially acceptable therefore making less kids take up the habbit.

Someone I know just got back from England, and she was seriously pissed at all the smokers in England. They smoked on the bus, in restaurants, everywhere! She was honestly so angry.

I smoke, but I completely agree with the smoking ban. Second-hand smoke really is bad, and they aren't saying you CAN'T smoke, just don't make other people. People always say, "well, it's my right to smoke", but it is the right of the non-smoker to remain that way. Smoking indoors or in entryways, or on the friggin' bus is just impolite. People don't want smoke in their faces all the time. I have no problem going outside or waiting so I can have a cigarette. It was my choice to start in the first place, and no one is making me continue to smoke. If I were that pissed about it, I'd quit.

your not aloud to smoke on buses and most restaurants have a non smoking area, there really cracking down on that kinda thing these days which is good. the only place i know that doesn't have a non smoking area or a complete ban is pubs and clubs, and lets be honest, your going to be at least 18 years old, its not going to affect little kids, if you dont like it go to the non-smoking part of the pub or if thats not available go to another pub that does. Most pubs have a non-smoking area. I come a small village and theres pubs with a non-smoking section. Its just another example of the nanny state that we are living in these days.

really?? i did not know NJ Banned smoking in Public places. i only knew Deleware was smoke free in all public places.

i dont smoke but i kind of like the smell of smoke. reminds me of my child hood i guess you can say. but going into a bar everyonce in a great while or a pool hall and almost everyone in there is smoking thats a little to much for me to handle.

my uncle owned a cigar shop a long time ago and he had a opening type thing where his friends and family came and had a good time and had free cigars out for everyone to smoke. well i had to go cause my parents couldnt find anyone to watch me. and everyone was smoking cigars pretty much except me cause i was like maybe 12 or 13. that place was so fuggin smokey it was unreal. my eyes were hurting and it stunk so bad. i had to go over to a Video rental place and play a video game just to get out of there and i hate the smell of Cigar smoke to this day. i rather smell weed.
