I've just been reading in my local paper than the local hospital is tightening it's ban on smoking even further now by not even allowing it ouside in its grounds. Even though I am for the ban in indoor public areas I think this is going too far. Personally some of the times I've been to the hospital is because an accident has happened and due to being in a bit of shock over it the first thing I want to do is have a cigarrette to calm down. I'm sure plenty of other people who visit the hospital are in the same boat too. Yes, I know smoking is bad for me but I'm an adult, I have all the information about the health risks and I can make up my own mind. It just seems this is another way of trying to turn our country into a nanny state!:mad

... I smoke (smoked!) but I completely agree with what the hospital is doing.

It's a friggin' HOSPITAL. Even outside the hospital, I don't think people should be exposed to cigarette smoke. It opens you to even more infections, pollutes your lungs... it is just all around unhealthy. People can smoke whenever, whatever. But hospitals? No way. People go there to get better, not breathe blue air.

I prided myself on being a polite smoker. Unless I was in my own home, I would smoke outside, never when there were kids with me, and when I worked, I never took "smoke breaks"--I would smoke on my actual break or wait. If I was smoking at home, I'd sit next to an open window and blow the smoke outside as much as I could. I never, never, never smoke in the car. And quite frankly, smoking anywhere near a hospital, even outside, just seems appalling to me.

The fumes that come out of the tail pipe of a car are 100 times worse than ciggerette smoke. Try getting 100 smokers into a closed garage and see how long it takes them to die, or just turn the car on and they will all be dead within a few hours. With that in mind should we only be able to drive within a mile of the hospitol and have to walk the rest of the way?

You are outside, and the laws prohibit smokers from smoking within so many feet of the entrance anyway so the nonsmokers don't have to walk through a cloud to get into the building. So what's the big deal?

Our Local Hospital did the same thing a few years back.. Banned smoking from all hospital property, including the parking lot. But I can tell you right now.. It does no good, People stil smoke when they are outside of the hospital.

i do agree with the no smoking near hospital ENTRANCES...but if you want to step out in the parking lot, that's your business...if someone doesn't want to be near smoke, they can walk around you, they dont have to walk right in your path to get in the hospital. As for the smoking ban in place for Houston, where I live, it is within 25 feet of any building entrances. I think that's kind of dumb and it sucks. As long as they don't say I can't smoke in my fucking car though I'll be ok. The ban doesn't go into effect until July of next year, so we'll see how that turns out.

This is my point, I agree smoking where people have to breathe in your fumes involuntary is wrong but what harm does it do anyone but myself if I'm outside, round the corner on my own having a little smoke? It seems like its just another way of trying to dictate to people how they should live their lives. I don't know how it's going to work out either seeing a lot of the doctors and nurses are smokers as well. I'm sure this new rule will end up getting ignored.

They banned smoking in any public place in the entire town I live in, including privately owned bars and restaurants. No more option for smoking or non.
