never heard of that one. I was thinking more of the whole unconcious urges bit. Now that's controversy.! lol
Problems with schools and university is that the intro to Psychology doesn't go back to the founding fathers they go back only so far and it is a shame because the earlier teachers are not given enough credit.

my major allowed me to take some sociology courses that allowed me to go to conferences and hear how teachers approach the problems with teaching students to think like a sociologist...it was quite interesting

I don't have an opinion on Freud because I know so little about him. Someone told me all his theories have been discredited but I don't know if that's true.

That's what I was taught. His writings don't hold up to scientific scrutiny because A)they're rediculous and B) they only focused on a small segment of the population, rich white women.

I have heard of the cocaine, and I know that is a factor I have seen flicks on him, but the flick also said that he had a odd upbringing and it gave him strange theories in the long run ...

I get the joke your teacher was trying to get across but his theories about sexuality were probably dead on. People make too big of a deal about how he concentrated on sex.

Freud's theories are groundbreaking but their use in clinical practice has been pretty much whittled down to a basic construct of human anxieties and coping techniques, along with his concepts of the mind, and while it's debatable, parts are undeniable. If you take his unethical conduct (sleeping with clients, Jung was worse of course), sexism, racism, and classism out of the equation (this is not a slight to him, but the time itself) you have some really interesting and honest thoughts about human consciousness and the way our experiences early on shape our reactions in later life.

The psychosexual stages are better explained by Erikson's developmental model, in my opinion. I like the idea of taking the reasonable portions out of the former and adding them to the latter. Erikson's developmental stages are brilliant, in my opinion. Even better built upon by Ivey, breaking up adolescence to fit the changing times.

Freud gave a lot of smart people a nice starting point to create some brilliant theories about psychology and therapy. Unmatched.
The theories as he originally intended them are out dated, and over the top to some degree, but like I said...he really had insight.

He was also pretty fucked up, thus starting the trend of the mental health professionals being made out of whacky people. :p
