I know this is bound to bleed into a debate about the US, but at least start by addressing your own nation's military.

The Founding Fathers of the United States warned against a standing military. I understand having had one in the past, but I truly think The time has come to transition to a reservist military. Close all outlying bases.

What do you think?

All for a reservist military. I can't imagine anyone wanting to invade Spain, there's fuck all here apart from mountains. And good luck to anyone trying to invade Blighty, hasn't been successfully done for centuries.

About time we stopped wasting time, money and man power on killing people.

The U.S. can longer afford to be the World's policeman, without being paid for it. :) I see you gave Kelvin a choice... lol.

I voted that it's our responsibility as a Super Power to protect our bases and allies. I see that 1 person agreed with me. Who was it?

Why is it our responsibility? Why do we even need to remain a superpower?

It is and always has been the US's responsibility as a United Nations member to protect and serve our allies. But who knows I may be talking out of my ass...
Solely our responsibility?? Who are we protecting, say, the UK against? Are they not capable of protecting themselves? I believe taking such a protectorate role over another sovereign country goes directly against our most basic tenets of liberty.

No arguement can be made against that the USA did an honourable and fantastic job in protecting Israel circa 1950. Funny how opinions can change so quickly.

If liberty is imposed upon a country, is it still liberty?

You're using an incident 60 years ago involving a manufactured country to justify us maintaining a military presence throughout the world today. Haven't times changed?

Actually I picked the top choice. :p Now as I think you've all ready said, why do you people who voted No.4 think "it is our responsibility to be the world's policemen"? Just because we used to be a rich nation who could afford to do it does not mean that should continue. Let the rest of the world pull their fair share of the weight. We can't afford it now and of late our integrity to make such judgments is in doubt. Yes, I'm referring to Iraq.

I notice that 6 voters believe we have the responsibility to maintain US military bases on foreign soil.

What's the justification?

I don't even know what that means, but you make it sound like you find it undesirable. I would like to see the US military confined to US soil, if that's what you're asking.

It doesn't in any way strike you as a disadvantage?

Would you simarlarly kick out out any foreign military personal in the US?

Well, I am from Egypt, and I say every country must have their own army, either to protect it, or protect the neighboring countries, as well as the union they belong to. Egypt has one of the excellent armies in the world. Not mentioning that the Egyptian Special Forces come second after India's, in the last war the Egyptian Army has been through, Egypt did all well and retrieved Sinai which was occupied by Israel.
