Spawned from the pet peeves thread, this got me thinking.

I'm not talking about times when things like swine flu were going around - if the government tells you to stay indoors then that's not an everyday case.

But if you have a cold, just a regular, sneezing and feeling like shit cold, do you have a responsibility to stay home so others don't catch it?

Interestingly, jobs where you're most likely to come into contact with the public several times a day if not constantly, such as waitress, cashier and so on, are also likely to be the jobs where you don't get paid when you're off.

It's definitely not practical, but I really hate when people come to work hacking and sneezing and being all sick around me. No one around here can afford to miss even a single day of work unpaid (well I get no paid off time) so the sick one at school or work is given the evil eye.

There's no winning in this reality :p

I'd love to stay at home everytime I have a cold but it's not very practical tbh

:homo: It's much more important that I go out to get food so that my family and I dont starve than worry about someone getting a cold which the'll probably get at some point anyway.

I will go to work if I must get something done... but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it.
I know that if I wash my hands often and don't touch my face or nose, I am much less likely to spread the germs. I make sure that if I sneeze or cough into my hands, I go and wash them right away without touching anything.
I may go to work sick and contagious, but I go to great lengths to minimize the risk of spreading it.....

It's the idiots that go to work sick, sneeze in their hands and never wash... they go around touching everything leaving their germs behind. They should stay the hell home

My supervisor, dumbass she is, will literally lean over my desk when she's sick, two inches from my face, showing me a piece of paper and breathing and coughing on me for 2 whole minutes. I want to slap her across the face. It's so inconsiderate.

To be honest, I have a gripe about people coughing and sneezing...but would be hypocritical if I said at this moment that all people should stay at home if they had the flu/cold/coughing and wheezing like they are going to drop dead in minutes

If PS or I are really sick, we stay home. We don't get paid for it but the best way to kick it is rest. PBBB is home sick today. I called out so I'm home w/her.

If you're sick and you can, stay home.

It's bad enough when I cash people out that are obviously sick. I use hand sanitizer constantly at work. But then other cashiers are sick and coughing all over the place. They can't afford to take a sick day.

I'm pretty lucky actually. In the two+ years I've worked there I've only gotten sick a couple of times. I really think it's the constantly sanitizing my hands that helps. It's usually PBBB bringing a germ home from school that gets us.

I worked one place and they TOLD me to stay home when I was sick...no ifs, ands, or buts about it...just STAY HOME. It was brutal, I missed pay for close to a week, but my boss said if I went in, he'd send me back home again.

I think if you're sick and considerate of others, it should be ok, but if you're lucky enough to have sick days...stay the hell home, don't bring that shit near me!:p

It depends on the sickness. If it's just a cold, I'll go out. I'll just take precautions like washing my hands very often and making sure I have plenty of tissues to cough/sneeze in.

If I have a stomach bug or feel like I am about to be sick; have a really high fever or some bug that is truely horrific, I will stay at home.

My mum used the same rules for sending us to school. We had a cold - we went in. Anything worse - stay at home.

So long as i can walk and act properly (no coughing or sneezing on everyone) i will come to work.
If I am sick though i will avoid all meetings or simply phone into them.

I have really bad allergies when the season changes so i always get the post nasal drip which is a nasty cough, if I was to stay home everyday i would only be at work like 20-30% of the time lol I do take meds for it but it only minimizes the symptoms.

If i have a big deadline i can always log in remotely from home and transfer my desk phone to my cell. Essentially being available for anything one-on-one meetings.

I work at a hospital. So if I am going to get sick. That is the place it would most likely happen. But with proper hygiene, spreading it can be avoided.

no people can't afford to do so... I think it's a ridiculous notion. Anyone remember the notice i posted on the wall of a hospital bathroom I was in? lol

Used to, I would go in even if I could barely talk. I wouldn't do that NOW, and if I don't feel well I'll stay home. I never realized how lucky I was to have paid sick leave, actually...guess I just always assumed it was the norm. Having said that, I'm currently sitting on roughly 750 hours of sick leave...and had I not had surgery and a 3 day hospital stay a few years back it would be much higher.

yeah, if i let Jace stay home for every sniffle, sneeze, cough he had, he'd miss a hell of alot of school and id get reported for it! if he's not running fever, throwing up/diarrhea, then he's in school!

If I'm not running a fever I'll go into work. I have sick/personal time but typically they still frown on people calling off unless they've got the flu.

it's incredible how oblivious some people are when they're sick and should be in bed instead. Many of these folks let you know they're as sick as can be right as they serve you your food that they've handled.

Talk about ignorant.
