Is it a good idea or bad idea to have all our DNA stored by the authorities/police?

I've read debates in the news and papers recently about whether we should have our DNA stored by police, so if crimes are committed etc, it will lead to easier convictions, and less tax payers money spent on investigating etc

People seem to be against cost, privacy and "civil liberties" I guess...but surely innocent people have nothing to fear?

The Po-po are cloning people Dana. lol

I think it's a good idea, it will make convictions far more accurate, the guilty will be pretty guilty.

Would it hurt? I mean.... giving up DNA? And how long would it be good for? And what if they spelled one's name wrong and things got mixed up? Oh so many variables.......

I don't think it's a good idea honestly. i watch too many law shows to know that shit wouldn't play out well ;) Besides if you're a law abiding citizen why the fuck should they have your DNA? We're walking a fine line on intrusion of privacy.

Yes I think this is a terrible idea.

When people say "innocent people have nothing to fear" - that's just complete rubbish. It's just another step towards totalitarianism if you ask me.

Besides, DNA being at a crime scene is not necessarily proof of guilt and it could lead to innocent people being accused of crimes that they wouldn't otherwise had their DNA not been on file.

It's the same as the ID card debate in the UK - I'm sorry but the supposed reasons for simply fall to pieces when weighted against the reasons against.

Its already led to problems here in the UK, a former chief policeman is claiming that many people have been arrested for silly little things which should be dealt with by a caution or on the spot fine, just so the police can get their DNA in the system.

Bad idea. If the police can prove you're a valid suspect they can get a warrant for your DNA, and that's the way it should be.

less tax money? they will spend maybe more collecting the dna and then the storage and systems to locate it

i dont plan on commiting any crime but i dont think they have the right to my dna. its like them asking my dick size so they can have a record of it

I'm worried about a bad cop hacking the system and framing someone they don't like for a crime or framing some innocent person for a crime they committed to get away with it.

If it would truly be secure, I see no problem with it.

It's not like DNA takes up a ton of space, they would probably have it all stored on computers.
