I was at Brooks AFB in San Antonio, Texas.

They locked our building down for five days. The only time we could leave was to go to chow, and we were escorted by two Humvee mounted with .50's on the front. It was hectic, and surreal.

I didn't think a few years after that I would be trekking through Afghanistan with the Army's 10th MD, all because of that day. I guess I always figured it would get resolved on a smaller scale. Well it's still not resolved, as we all know.

and to think to years later it still feels just as surreal as that tragic day.

What about you? Where were you at?

Working at Toys R Us with no word from the outside world (the TVs for the video-games would not change the station) and the radios did not have strong signals...didn't know much until I was home and watched the whole thing unfold...

I was in like kindergarden or something. Me and my brother came home to see the tv on and the two burning towers.

I was in Geography class in school, the teacher turned the TV on and we watched it on the news. I didn't really understand the global impact then but I did realise it was a bad thing that had happened.

It was the afternoon at work on a sunny day when news started coming through and everyone hit the internet to try to find out more information.

I was at work and my supervisor came over and told me we were shutting down... Our company shipped mostly to the states..... I went home and watched the news coverage, talked to Jim on the phone.

In 10th grade, having my school yearbook photo taken. That photo was taken seriously minutes either before or after the first plane hit. I walked off the stage and up the stairs to my class rooms, and the teachers were beginning to turn on the tvs.

I was at home watching a video, didn't have DVD back then. Finished watching the film and turned it off to be confronted with one of the towers on the news and something about a plane crash. Thought it was terrible and wondered why there was just one tower there because I always thought there were two. Took a few minutes to realise the enormouty of the situation.

I was in middle school at the time, and it was a normal day at school. We were sitting at our desks and the teacher was sitting in her office chair in front of the class talking about stuff. A secretary came in and showed her a piece of paper, then exited. This happened multiple times throughout the morning, the teacher acted normal and nobody thought anything of it. Later on during health class, kids started leaving in droves. Kids were getting told that they were being picked up and were obviously confused. At that point, I figured something weird was going on- half of the class just doesn't leave for the day for nothing. At the end of the school day the principal came over the loud speaker and explained what had happened.

It was shocking, just a year before I had visited the World Trade Center and been on the observation deck. I really didn't understand the huge implications either though.

I had just retired from over 30 years of government service and was painting a picket fence in front of my home. I was listening to classical music on NPR when the news reporter broke in with the story. I went inside to the TV and stared in disbelief.

i was at home in Toronto making tea when the neighbour i had just met the day before knocked at the door and said,'i'm scared. Can i come in?" i said yes and asked why she said turn your TV on... we sat on the couch and watched the news live as the second plane hit the tower... i called my husband and begged him to come home but he stayed on call at Pearson Airport while everything and just about everyone in TO was bracing for something to happen here as well...

it was a terrifying day...

my neighbours packed their bags and left for NY as they couldn't get ahold of their families.

my sisters boyfriend and our friends who are firefighters took time off and headed out asap...

and worst of all... my friend who worked in one of the towers.... i've never heard from him again... :(

Very sad, so sorry to hear about your friend.

I was in my office on a call in to a safety meeting when someone barged into the room, crying saying a plane had just hit the WTC. I was in shock, just listening in, but figuring it couldn't be anything serious....how could it be? Those buildings were constructed to withstand accidents, and I was sure it was just an accident, no one would ever do this ON PURPOSE, not in the States, not in New York.

We hung up from the meeting and I went to the Board Room and flipped on the TV and like the rest of the world, I was dumbfounded...it was worse than anything imaginable.

My heart breaks for the families today....they've suffered so much over the past 10 years, but today, with it all over the tv, the internet, the new papers....they can't escape it.

It was my day off and I was sitting on the edge of the coffee table, listening to the news about the first crash while I waited for my sister to pick me up to go shopping. I remember thinking wow, I have no idea what's going on but I don't want to miss any of it, so I popped a tape into my vcr and recorded the rest......I also remember the feeling of doom that came over me when I played it back and watched that news man give his report as the second plane crashed into the towers directly behind him. I thought it was the end of the world, which for some, it so horribly was. ((heavy sighs))

I woke up on September the 12th (my brothers birthday) to see all the clips all over the news before heading off to a very strange day at school. Far away from the chaos (in NZ) but still damn scary

I was 13 at the time. My mom came to wake my brother and I up for school, and my brother's radio was listening to Alice Cooper or something..and he was talking about it. My mom didn't believe it until she turned on the TV. I was sitting on the couch in my parent's living room watching the news when the second plane hit. My mom called our neighbor because they had a lot of family back east in NY, too. She couldn't get ahold of any of her family members that lived in NY. I know there was minor concern that if this was a widespread attack, there was a nuclear power plant not far from here. We went to school, but didn't do much. We pretty much just watched everything unfold on the news in every class. No one could really focus anyway.

I came home from school and my sister had the TV on, watching the news report. I remember it felt very unreal. It's strange to think I was only 14 when it happened - it feels like it was a couple of months ago.

I feel the same, I can't believe it was 10 years ago. I remember the day so clearly

September 11th is funny like that, for lack of better term, at least for me. There are days last week that I can't remember clearly, however, THAT day, I can tell you what I ate for each meal, what time I went to sleep, etc. It's surreal, if I could go back in time and change any one day, I'd have prevented September 11th from happening. Then maybe many of my Brothers would still be here with me. (this isn't a boo hoo poor me, pity party post, it's the real thing, September 11th was a tragedy and didn't need to ever happen.)
