Seatbelts

Do you think not wearing a seat belt should be a tougher penalty than it is now?

i vote yes. because for children, they need to be in a seatbelt, hell everyone does. but if you chose not to that is your own fault. kids depend on you.

For children, definatly. For adults, I don't think it matters. If you're so stupid that you don't think you need a seatbelt you deserve to die (yes, I am aware that is from Mind of Mencia.) Just like smoking, if you wanna stick that thing in your mouth and kill yourself, go for it, just don't do it around me.

I say yes as well.
Kids only get taught what you teach them. So lead by example and wear a seatbelt. I always buckle up when I am driving. But sometimes, I have to be reminded when sitting in the passenger seat.

I said no,

Been booked enough for that to know fines are high enough
(Joking)

I think if your stupid enough not to wear one then thats your own fult

For kids yes I would agree higher fines for the drivers for not making kids wear seatbelts :D

If you don't want to wear a seatbelt its your choice. Kids though should have to wear them.

Just to let you guys know I wear my seatbelt, hooray for me!

It's law that you have to wear your seatbelt. It's a proven fact that seatbelts save lives.

If you're really in that big of a damn hurry then you should leave 4 seconds earlier so you can put your seat belt on. It's not that hard to do.

Not sure of the fine here but you also lose points off your licence, & sometimes, during holidays, we have double demerits, which means that if you & just one passenger are not wearing your seatbelt, you will lose your licence.

Cool, huh.

We have had mandatory seatbelts since the eighties (?). There were a lot of road deaths & no Air Bags, so they did something about it & the road toll went down a fair bit.

I have been nailed twice and it was enough to teach me. Now I wear it everytime. I think the fines were about $30-35 each here.

I don't think they should be mandatory. I've actually survived a car accident without a seatbelt when I would have died if I had it on cuz the roof of my truck would have crushed me.

I think there was a study out there that showed seatbelts take more lives then they save. I'm not 100% sure on that one but I can see that they "help" but don't prevent accidents or injuries from accidents so i think it should just be a choice.

Well it's pretty strict here, about £100 fine plus 3 points off your license and that includes if any of your pasengers arn't wearing there seat belt too. Seat belts do save lives. Everyone here grows up being taught

You are a moron if actually believe this crap. I won't judge your particular accident because I wasn't there and didn't see anything. There may be a case here or there where someone wasn't wearing a seatbelt that actually caused them to be saved as opposed to dying if they had worn one.

There is no way any study you have ever seen that would prove that setbelts take more lives than save. No they will not prevent accidents or injuries, but they can save lives, and prevent the severity of injuries. I don't know how many times I've heard or read about accidents where somebody died when they were thrown from the vehicle because they weren't wearing a seatbelt. No try to tell me that they still would have died if they were wearing seatbelts.

BTW I have been in some minor accidents wearing a seatbelt and without wearing a seatbelt and been injured both way. The injury with the seatbelt could have been a lot more severe had not not been wearing the seatbelt, that is for sure.

I'd like to see that bogus study...

A related NHTSA study found that three-point seat belts reduced fatalities by 45 percent in passenger car crashes and 60 percent in light truck crashes. Fatality reduction is as high as 80 percent in some types of crashes, such as rollovers involving vans, sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks.
"Seat belts are absolutely our most effective safety device," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta. "If everyone buckled up, thousands of lives could be saved annually."

That's airbags dip-fuck, and I don't even think that's true if it's someone who's the right size and weight. That's why kids shouldn't ride in the front of the car till about 10 or so.
