Scary moment

Riley has a rawhide that she plays fetch with, tosses around and sometimes chews on.

I looked over and she's got her paws in her mouth, practically down her throat, doing some crazy thing with her tongue, and kind of contorted. So I freaked out- my furry baby is choking! I go grab her and try to look and see if I could grab it. Couldn't see anything. So I got her water bowl thinking she could kind of wash it down. She was still breathing. Then Matt tried to check in her mouth and wouldn't call the emergency vet.

I googled and place after place was closed. I finally found a place about half an hour away that did free phone consultations.

So I called and had to repeat myself several times because the lady couldn't understand me through my panic. And by the time she finished her list of scenarios, Riley was walking around normal.

I'm still shaken up, but she's fine. I actually think she may have just had it stuck on the roof of her mouth, now that I think about how her tongue was moving.

my bluey does it all the time. A stick or bone will get lodged up there and I have to get it out. He's done it so many times now, he just sits placidly while I do it
Once, he had a bone so tightly lodged in there, I had to use a shifting spanner:willy_nilly:

I've only had to resort to the spanner once, but yeah he did. He knew I was helping him

It is scary for sure. I've had the same thing happen to my dog a couple of times. I quit buying rawhides. Now I give her those teeth cleaning hard type biscuits that last longer. For a snack I give her Biscuit Treats.

Glad Riley is okay.

I knew they could choke, so she only gets it when we're home, and it's not like she ever lets me out of her sight, so I can always see her chewing on it. I didn't know it could get stuck up there.

When we first got it, she was possessive and growled whenever we came near it, so it would come down for five minutes and then go on top of the pantry. She would go crazy looking for it. I put it away last night and she hasn't noticed. I guess she's not interested anymore. Poor baby.

There is always one thing or another.. isn't it?..
I can imagine how you felt, I have been there many times with my own dogs and also with the ones at the vet's clinic..

Rawhide is something all dogs love.. it's good exercise for their mouths and it helps keep those little choppers white..
It gets soft when they chew and lick it, and sometimes they break a big piece.. if they try to swallow it, that's when they get in trouble.. :willy_nilly:

Be careful with any hard biscuit, cookie or treat... Always break it into very small pieces.. I've seen little and big dogs try to swallow them whole and almost choke when they get lodge in their throats..

Little dogs are just like little kids.. they will try to taste, lick, chew and swallow anything they see.. so you never give them anything smaller than their mouths..

The same rules for little kids apply to little doggies..

Try to buy a big rawhide bone the next time, instead of a tiny one for her size.. it will last for a long time and there will be less chance that she will break and swallow a big piece.
The same goes for toys.. don't buy anything small, or that can fit inside her mouth.. or anything that can be torn apart in small pieces by her..

I will never understand why they make tiny toys for dogs and cats, when everyone knows they have sharp incisors that will break them in tinier pieces in no time at all!!..

Never try to put any kind of hard tool inside her mouth.. as you can do much damage to the inside of her mouth, teeth or throat..
- Instead, you can start to train her to let you stick your hand inside her mouth, all the way to her throat.. by feeding her tiny pieces of her food..
- Wrap your finger in some gauze and rub her teeth, tongue and the roof of her mouth..
- Play with her tongue when she is panting or giving you licks... grab it gently and give it a tiny pull..
- Make everything like a game, and soon she will trust you and let you do things inside her mouth..

That will give you an advantage for the times you will need to give her medication, and also for ~ God forbid!~ another time like this..

We never know where or what they will do, so it's better to be prepared, and know what to before there is an emergency..
If you don't know how to stick your hand all the way in, ask your vet to teach you.. You will be glad to know how the next time..

Above all.. try not to panic, because she will sense that and get more stressed.. ♥ ♥

And it sounds bad, but that moment made me realize how much I love my babys. She's pretty clingy and it's annoying sometimes, so I was kind of take it or leave it with her. But now I KNOW.

You remind me of when I was a newlywed.. had just arrived in the US and didn't speak English.. had no family or friends.. but and had my first puppy!..

The things I would invent every day!..

I would play hide and seek with him..
I would make believe I was throwing a toy, and when he ran to get it, I would hide and watch him looking for me with a WTF?? expression on his face :eek.. and laugh hysterically when his expression would change to a big smile when he saw me again!!..

And it sounds bad, but that moment made me realize how much I love my babys. She's pretty clingy and it's annoying sometimes, so I was kind of take it or leave it with her. But now I KNOW.

Lilly is ten years old now, and it's the only dog I have left... She is still my baby and very clingy too, especially since Emma, my Rottweiler died.. and cannot stand to have me out of her sight..
She loves it when I hide things in my hands.. She tries to open them with her paws and when I finally let her do it, she sits and looks at me, waiting for a little treat..
