With Peter Jackson now out of the running rumours have run rife over who will be chosen to bring The Hobbit to the big screen, and during an interview for Spidey 3 Sam Raimi let slip that he had been approached by New Line in regards to directing The Hobbit.
The interview
My preference would be to see Jackson take the reigns...but, if that is not to be so (I still have my fingers crossed), I couldn't think of anyone better to do the job than Raimi...I think he would do very well, and would be faithful both to the story elements as well as the visuals There are also many parallels between Jackson and Raimi.

New Line has also rumored to approach you to do The Hobbit. Have they approached you to do The Hobbit? Are the rumors, fact, fiction?
Well, the truth is I just don't know what I'm going to do next, that's the most honest answer I can give you. And I can't honestly say, even though I have spoken to Bob Shay, that--I don't know that I could honestly say that anything's been offered to me until some time in the future, because, it just wouldn't be exactly right. Or true.
