They get real ugly and rotten this time of the year and you wouldn't want to eat them.

I wish I could have been on a scaffold or a bridge above them with a polarizing filter attached to the lens. It's quite the scene to watch. Nature at it's finest.

They were doing it or shedding scales? Or both. This is so cool. The only salmon I get to see is what's on the Discovery Channel or what's in the frozen section of the store.

They were actually spawning Tara and they don't really shed their scales. What they really do is rot from the outside inward. They also change their shape, hence the hump. When they are done they roll over and die over the course of a few days or even weeks. There was a lot of dead ones laying about and that's why I go there. The bald eagles love to feast on them and I like to shoot 'em while they're eating. Unfortunately they were way off in the distance having some sort of meeting or something.

How far away were you? I'm assuming it was a zoom shot?

There wasn't an otter around and I doubt any reside in the area. As far as distance... well I was within 100' or so and yes I used a zoom lens. I could have gotten within 10' if I would have been energetic enough to walk through the bush a bit but considering it was a bit wet I chose not to. Maybe next weekend might be better and I'll give it another go.

There are black bears in that area Fred. One local resident told me the same one is seen quite often and has been coming around for years. Thankfully he chose not to sneak up on me today. I would love to get a shot of one from a safe distance though.
