Not trying to focus on machines that get out of control, but how long do you think it will be before human beings are removed from direct combat roles in favor of drones and other remotely controlled/A.I. vehicles? My guess is as soon as 100 years.

We have all ready seen probably the last generation manned fighter aircraft. They can be made much less expensive without instruments, environmental systems, and the advantage of a low profile and high sustainable g's that a human could not take. And what costs more- train a soldier, feed them and pay them or build an army of machines? They are not there yet but moving rapidly towards it.

This video does not apply to this discussion but is interesting none the less, an in-development mech suit:

I think it'll be sooner than that. Technology is advancing ever faster after all.

I suppose the only thing is that it puts an entire section of the population out of a job.

One would sincerely hope that by the time robot warfare is possible, there will no longer be a need for war.

However, I cannot see a time where robots completely replace humans on the battlefield. Warfare is about conquering your enemy, and a robot isn't the enemy. Warfare requires human collateral damage for it to be successful. I suppose you could see humans and robots fighting side by side. By by God it would be costly. The powers that be won't contemplate replacing humans until robots become cheaper than humans... which is centuries off, if not longer.

I wish that instead of making robots for war, that people would create peace with one another instead

:thumbup :thumbup

Think of all the resources used in fighting wars, imagine if that was used for a better purpose, the sky would be the limit for human achievement.

There's no 'need' for war right now, we just don't seem capable of solving our problems differently. I really doubt human nature will ever let the world truly live in peace, because people will always disagree with others, and where there are millions who can live their own lives without being offended that others live differently, there will always be those who feel they know better.

On a far smaller scale - is it ever possible to have a truly peaceful online forum? Maybe if you only allow tiny forum with few members, who all have similar views and personalities that don't clash. But the larger the forum, the more people who clash, and a lot of people would rather shove in their two cents of angry assertions than 'go along to get along'. It happens all the time. The whole world is one big online forum, and expecting everyone to get along because it's the grown up thing to do is incredibly optimistic :)

There is a strong need for war now - how else do you think the West lives so comfortably in comparison to the rest of the world? This is all war is about these days: cheap resources - from oil, to food, to labour. Capitalism and corporatism need war to continue expanding. War is never about a disagreement. Pretty much every conflict of the past 100 years (bar WWII) has been about securing resources from another country, either by literally taking the resources by force, or by destroying the country sufficiently that is simply has to sell it's resources cheaply. Warfare will not stop until this very root cause is addressed.

Comparing disagreements to warfare is erroneous I think. Humans will always disagree. Very few will want to start a war over it, certainly not when their life will be put on the line.

There will never be a 100% robot war

It always takes manpower to conquer

A good portion could be done by robots. But that will only go so far.

If it ever did get to that point then it would be very unsettling because there would be a lot more preemptive strikes and I could see that escalating into nukes

That doesn't make it a need, just because we want something someone else has. I see why it appears necessary but I don't think it makes war acceptable at all.

No, but my point was that whether on a small scale or a world war scale, these things come down to people not being able to get along. Your example about cheap resources - it's basically like bullying. Because we couldn't get what we wanted by asking nicely. That's why I think war will never die out, on every scale people are having stupid arguments, from online debates to 'give us your crops'.

Of course you are right, and I agree with you 100%, but the powers that be don't agree with us. They need to have war to fulfill their needs, and to fulfill the selfish needs of our consumer societies.

Having a disagreement doesn't lead to war. Humans will always disagree, it's completely avoidable. My point was war is never fought over disagreements. Invading a country to steal their resources isn't a disagreement, it's Imperialism, plain and simple.
