I posted this in my thread ... but I think it is relevant in yours Scott.
So if doing drugs makes one happy, is that ok? If what makes one person happy may hurt another person; is it still ok? If what makes one person happy actually hurts society, but they don't see it that way ... is it still ok? If what makes someone happy actually hurts themselves but they are in denial and don't see it ... is it still ok?
We can't stop people from having free will and who would really want to? None of us, right? But imo people that have the mind set that them being happy is mainly part of their life purpose actually causes a lot of pain to everyone around them because of the self centered focus even if done unintentionally. I'm sure I am not explaining myself perfectly here, so bare with me.
I think that the more we are focused on self, the more arrogant, self absorbed, prideful, etc. we are and that it actually keeps us from being all we can be. It keeps us from being able to do all that we really could do. So it is the opposite of what one would actually think is rational: If we are mainly focused on ourselves and our goals we can accomplish everything, right? We accomplish much, but are we really accomplishing all we truly can? Are we getting along with others as best as we can? How much drama is in our lives? Etc. etc. etc.
I say when our primary focus is not on our own happiness, the more effective we are at life. Further more I say when we are focused on God everything else falls into place exactly where it is suppose to.
