The Australian reported Gervais closed the Golden Globes by thanking God for making him an atheist. By Monday morning NBC bosses had received complaints from dozens of managers of US television market areas. They questioned why NBC had not bleeped out his final quip as it would swearing.

"Religion in America is far more taboo than sex, drugs or Eddie's cross-dressing," said one sympathetic critic. "It's regarded as deeply impolite to mention it. It starts fights."
It's not as if those real Americans are pretending to be thin-skinned. This is not faux outrage. They are genuinely shocked that outsiders do not take Christianity as seriously as they do.
What do you think, was Gervais out of line with his closing comment or do Americans need to lighten up?

Definately lighten up. It amazes me how hyper sensitive a lot of Americans get about god and religion while hypocritically not seeing how offensive the're being by telling people the're going to burn in hell. I love this clip where Ricky Gervais talks about a god who created everything.:thumbup:D

Yeah, like everyone before me I think they need to lighten up. I don't find anything offensive in his comment on the other hand I'm not really a Christian so it's hard to say.

I don't see what exactly is so offensive about the comment tbh. Love Ricky Gervais, he's hilarious.

The people who were offended by this joke, regardless if he is an Atheist or not, need to stop worrying about God's honor. God can take care of himself. Keep in mind religious views are relative. In a country like Pakistan, dozens (hordes?) of "good" Muslims would feel compelled to murder him for such comments.
