Another review....

Being a fan of producer Judd Apatow, I had high expectations of this film. I must have watched it 4 or 5 times now, I know that seems like lots of times to watch a film considering it's only been out about 18 months. That considered I'm not sure that this film has repeat watchability. The first time I saw it I thought it was awesome, the second time thought it was great, the third time good, and so on. I never got to the point of thinking it was a bad film, I'm not saying that. I just think that a lot of the gags may only be funny because you don't see them coming or catch you slightly off guard. When you know what's coming it's not so funny any more. But watch it once or twice and it's a funny, in some places heart-warming film.

It also goes out of its way to show the characters as honestly as possible, meaning it's the kind of film you would want to watch with your buddies. Some of the scenes in it could make some people feel a little uncomfortable, although if you're on this site I doubt very much that you fall into that category. I last watched this film on DVD with my mother. Party girl and young at heart as she is I still winced as I knew a particularly crude part was coming up, but she laughed, so that's got to be a good sign.

Much of the film is made up of an endless quest for sex and booze. In the hope that the latter will lead to the former. Yet, like Apatow's other films, there's a genuine sweetness somewhere in there.

The story follows Seth and Evan, two, I would say slightly geeky or off-the-norm boys. They find their time at High-School coming rapidly to an end, with only two months until they graduate, and with Evan having got into a better university than Seth, the clock is ticking for them to get laid. After being unexpectedly invited to a party by the gorgeous Jules in cooking class, it looks like they might be drawing Aces.

There's always a drawback though, or it would have been a very short movie. Seth volunteers to get the alcohol for the party, knowing his friend will be getting a fake ID that day. But you soon realise it's not going to be that easy as they embark on their journey to have some drink fuelled sex.

You do find yourselves willing them on throughout the film, thinking the party will soon be over and that they need to hurry up. But then you come back to the realisation that film time is very different to time in real life and that the party is just getting started. Also, if they just got there already, it'd be a very short movie and we would not have the comedy gems that could only work with this great group of actors.

In all a good film, the tension is held well, probably because we can all feel the sexual frustration that Seth (Jonah Hill) is feeling and his fast paced comedy and energy.

Would recommend a viewing.

i really enjoyed this movie, but i must admit i felt it drag A LOT in the middle. i was more invested in the story of the two cops with mclovin than i was with seth and evan by the end of it. still recommend it, though!
