Although this story is a bit old, This is the first I have heard about it. And I must say, If it is true, It is also rather sad.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- At least 10 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed by one of the animals last week, an official said Tuesday, prompting concerns of revenge attacks on the normally docile fish.

The popular television star was killed last week when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a TV show off Australia's Great Barrier Reef, prompting an outpouring of grief in Australia and among his fans worldwide.

The dead stingrays have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state, including two that were found Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said.

Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently catch the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice is uncommon.

Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's conservation group Wildlife Warriors, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for the TV star's death.

"It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said.

He said killing stingrays was "not what Steve was about."

"We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife," he said.

Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage along the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand. When stepped on or otherwise frightened, a serrated spine up to 25 centimeters (10 inches) long in the animal's tail flares up.

The spines emit toxins that can kill small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people die from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus.

Hornby said people should treat stingrays with caution, but "there is still no need to ... kill or mutilate these important animals."

Why am I not surprised? As sad as it is that he's dead, Steve Irwin obviously did something wrong to get stung and killed by a stingray. They even said it, he swam over top of it, which you are not supposed to do. If you really cared about Steve Irwin, you wouldn't do the one thing he would have hated to see and kill innocent animals. And even if you were going to, why kill INNOCENT ones? Kill the one that killed him. But even killing that one is still wrong. WE are invading THEIR territory, and they are just using their God-given natural defenses in hopes of staying safe. If a man comes into your yard, tries to kill you, and you shoot him, then he's at fault. And I don't see the same thing happening with murderers. If a guy kills somebody, then why doesn't somebody start killing innocent people of the same religion, race, or ethnicity in hopes of getting revenge? Because it's just plain wrong, that's why. And as much as I hate them, you know PETA is going to have a field day with this one.

Irwin would not have wanted any animal killed for what happened to him. It was an unfortunate accident & animals, sometimes, just do their own thing. There was a bear activist killed recently in the States (or Canada) who said that if he was ever attacked by a bear he didn't want antone taking any action against it.

As for swimming over the top of a stingray, they bury themselves under the sand & it is really difficult to see them as they blend in perfectly with the sandy bottom. He was probably not even aware that there was a stingray there & all it did was to react to a perceived threat - it just lashed out.

Yeah, but if you have been hearing a lot of it lately, you are supposed to shuffle your feet to make sure there are no Stingrays present, and to make them aware of your presence, not frighten them, startle them, or scare them.
I dont recall Steve saying "avenge me" before he died.

Oh yes he did. You just missed it on the news report.

He was swimming in the water, not walking through it, so shuffling his feet would not have worked.
