RIP - What does it really mean? I've said it and probably everyone else has too.

Does it mean best wishes in the After Life?

What do you visualize when you say RIP?

I picture the deceased at a funeral viewing, really...or in their plot. Nothing to do with the afterlife, I actually think it wouldn't make much sense to relate it to an after life theory- one doesn't rest, right? They float around and eat Philadeplhia cream cheese bagels with angels?

I guess that when you die and are buried or whatever its in a nice, peaceful place which dosen't get disturbed or desecrated.

I say it because it's the social norm.
I don't think anything of it, I know it's a ridiculous statement, but it doesn't get peoples backs up like: "I hope you won't rise from the dead and be a puppet of the dark lord."

And here I thought the topic was going to be Whitney Houston.

To answer your question, I think RIP is along the lines of "eternal sleep".

I don't usually say it. It doesn't sound right to me.

Especially because I associate the idea of someone not resting peacefully with them coming back to do a little haunting :ninja

Rest in peace to me means. Most people struggle in life just to survive. They are never at peace truly or struggle against disease to live. Rest in peace seems fitting.

So if one does not visualize rest in the after life then it really means "Rot In Peace"?
