As a rule I really dislike non-reality/reality tv. However lately I have been watching "Pawn Stars" (History Channel), about the items people bring into a Las Vegas pawn shop. It is interesting enough. If you are not familiar, people can "pawn" an item, use it as collateral for a loan. In a set period of time, they can retrieve the item if they pay back the loan plus interest otherwise it becomes the property of the pawn shop. And they can outright sell items to the pawn shop. One thing I really like about the show is that if someone brings in an item the owner is not familiar with, he calls in an expert to examine it while the customer is standing there, so there is no taking advantage of an unsuspecting buyer.
In the last episode I watched the guys son who also works there, purchased a hot air ballon. With trepidation the father asked whats the damage? The son says "38". The father says "$3800, that is not too bad", and the son comes back with "no $38000". It was a hoot.
Some of the things that people bring in need to go to an antique store or auction, not a pawn shop.
There is another show called American Pickers which I also find interesting but I will not become a devotee of either show.
