A would-be rapist sustained injuries to his penis after his victim bit him.

Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said on Wednesday that the 37-year-old woman was attacked at Sunnyridge in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

The man forced her to undress, but the woman managed to bite his penis before he could rape her.

Police were alerted after people heard screams. The suspect was in so much pain that he was unable to flee.

Police arrested the man and took him to hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

He remains in police custody and will appear in court soon.

Ngidi praised the woman for her bravery but cautioned that "fighting back during such attacks cannot always be encouraged, unless it is safe to do so". - Staff Reporter
