random computer shutdowns

well, ive been having alot of these lately, where the computer just shuts off, no windows shutdown at all...

i thought, ok, maybe the case is too hot, so ill put in a fan from my "tear-downs" collection, which luckily was a three-pin fan. installed, and still it shut down unexpectedly.

well, about id say 5 minutes ago, it did it again, and this time i rebooted the computer immediately and for some reason, i went to hardware monitoring, and guess what i saw..






























cpu temp: 94.5 * c | 202 * f ...




weird thing is that the processor fan is spinning up only to 1662 ( the rpm it was at when i rebooted and looked into the bios setup screen for hardware monitoring )



so. now i need me a new fan, and this is the only thing ( posting this topic ) im doing, and then shutting down with windows, to let it cool down.


question is, anyone got a p4 processor fan available?

how do you find out your computers tempeture?

when your computer boots up, there should be a message somewhat like:


press del to enter setup


del might be a different key, and the message will say something with that key name in it, such as:

press f1 to enter setup


or maybe it says press <key> to enter bios setup utility

once inside the bios utility setup program or whatever the computer calls it, just look around in the menus ( navigation by the up/down/left/right keys ) for something like "hardware monitor" ...

and press the enter key to view

well isn't there in option in BIOS where it says "automatically shut down the computer if the CPU temp reaches blah blah blah". who don't you just get a new cooler for uhm $70

This is what mine does; I't wont reboot if it just sits in idle status, but after I start some apps or connect to the internet it will reboot after a few minutes. I thought it might be my power supply going bad but mybe its over heating.

Mine use to do that, we found out it was just too hot and had to get a new fan.

I was looking at the back of the PC and there is a plate missing from where I had a video card installed. That could be a problem. Plus my fan is very dirty from all of the dust thats accumualted from the opening. maybe i will clean it up and find a nother cover for it. Couldn't hurt. :dunno

heres what happens:

im doing something, or windyxp semi-logs me out for lack of activity.
the screen goes black.
the hard drives spins down and stops.
mouse light goes out.
speakers make a sound - probably returning to the "just-powered-on" position of the cones inside the speakers...
and then the computer is off.

no rebooting.

btw, i emailed intel about it, got an automated response that doesnt help at all, so im gonna pursue it further, and maybe ill get a new processor :banana

that also sounds like a virus or something like such. do any *extracircullar* activities recently that may have downloaded some virii?

id run a virus scan see if anything pops up

This is on my Pc that's running Linspire. (linux) . I was so disgusted with trying to keep the virus updates updated and the spyware checker updated when I had Windows xp running on it that I bought Linspire and loaded it onto my PC that was having problems. I do believe if there was a virus or bug on the hard drive that it would have been erased or any unusable portion of it would have been segmented away.

I unplugged my PC from the power strip that it was on. I'm thinking before I go and change my power AC adaptor or change any hardware that I will run it from a new Power strip that I bought. Plus I put a blank out plate back on to increase my fan air flow(One was missing).

So then... If everything I have done dosen't help then I will run Linspire from the CD to check to see if it is the hard drive that has problems.
After that I guess its Nortons disk doctor and then Slick disk which will totally erase everything on the disk and leave it unformatted.

yeah, rebooting is interesting. i dont have any expirence with teh linux distros, but maybe ill play with it for a little :dunno

Sounds like the proc...

Although worth checking with an external third party thermal probe as the motherboard thermal sensor may be damaged thus erroneously reporting overtemp causing the bios to shutdown.

An easier test would be to leave the covers off your system... wait for it to shutdown... then take off the heatsink. Touch the top of the die, if it is scolding to the touch then the chip is being cooked and needs replacing.

If it is cool, then I would suspect the board.

Short of replacing the board... you could use your own thermal sensor and make a simple switch to cutoff mains AC. Then disable temp monitoring in BIOS. At the end of the day your expensive proc is protected.

In addition, I have seen irregular powerdowns like this caused by the PSU.

Cheaper switching PSU's with unstable currents can be effected by other system compnents. Any system that cannot retain a stable 5v logic rail will fall over. Without special equipment it is not possible to accurately monitor power output.

In your scenario... I'd suggest either trying another PSU or... lighten your overall power load... ie USB powered dev's, drives, mem, adapters...

If the fault goes away... woohoo... if not.. well at least you ruled power out.. :cool

FYI - Harddrive motors can cause current fluctuations. In weakened PSU's this can result in crashes. It is suggested that hard drives be kept on seperate power lines from other devs... /fans/dvdrw/powered videocards... etc. Some manufacturers supply carbon cores to alleviate this problem.

have you checked the capacitors on the motherboard yet? my computer did something similar it would shut down after a random amount of time, but would shut down more often under a heavy processing load. it had swollen and busted capacitors. i'f your piece is workin at all your processor probly isn't the problem. also are you getting the correct voltage readings?

the 12v, 5v, and vcore ( i think 1.25v ) is actually overspec'ing, but not much. the 3.3v line is below, but thats how its been with all my comps :dunno


interesting thing is though, after we are done with using the computer ( its the family comp, but i bought, so if i move, it goes with me ) we shutdown normally, so this issue doesnt really persist anymore, and the asus utililty program "asus probe" doesnt show that big of a proc temp anymore ... highest ive seen in that utility is 76, which is a bit high for what i was doing, basically surfing ... :dunno
