I don't get those English and European highways.
What's the difference between them? Like here we have State routes, US routes and Interstate routes.
State are owned and operated by the state, US & interstate routes are owned by the feds but operated by the states they're in with the help of a national highway budget from the Feds, the difference between US and Interstate routes is the access. US routes are open access usually with houses along them and Interstates can only get on and off through exchanges or on/offramps.
