Yeah depending which service pack it comes pre-installed with it can take some time. Not to mention Windows is notorious for frequent reboots during the patching process which adds to the overall install time. Just curious, what type of laptop did you get and I am assuming this came with Windows 7?

Hope you get alot of use from it..I have seen some Toshiba laptops last for years.
A laptop doesn't generally last as long as a desktop..but I have seen some Toshibas that get several hours of use a day and hold out well.
Did it come with recovery software or do you have to create your own discs ?...if you have to create your own...may want to get some quality discs and create them before you forget about it.
When my Dell here dies I may get a Toshiba if the prices are competitive when its time to shop.

Cool, yeah the Toshiba's do have a really good reputation. A lot of the earlier model satelite laptops (light gray color) are still working today, al beit outdated but hardware wise still functional. Most of the newer computers come with a recovery partition, so if something happens you can boot to the recover partition without discs and restore from the pre-loaded image on the local drive. I believe on Toshiba's you hold down the 0 key on boot-up to access the recovery menu. But obviously having an external recovery method via media (discs or USB) is ideal incase the drive fails. There are alot of good online backup software or storage locations for copies of your items which also helps. Amazon has one for files and music, Google has one, Microsoft has one... another one I really like is Waula which is by LaCie and they will let you sync up to 5GB for free across different platforms (phones, windows, mac, linux) and it is encrypted on the client side which is nice so much more secure than the other big brand solutions for your sensitive data.

can you even access the bios on boot up?
Nope. Cant even access safe mode or nothing. No boot up screens show or anything xD Don't matter how many times I press those F# Keys. They think it is a hardware issue (So they are making me send out my laptop to get it "fixed") and honestly, I can't see why. Things had run very smoothly and the windows pop up to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8) came up so I said why not. (I have never upgraded to 8.1 on any other computer, not even this laptop I'm using now which is also Windows 8) Well, looks like I will never be trusting that again xD Damn Microsoft and their shitty updates lmao. Anyhow, ya the laptop worked fine and everything. Was not until the windows 8.1 upgrade rebooted a couple times before showing the black screen and just not showing anything.

My best bet is video drivers or something are not compatible with 8.1. I have no idea. I can't access anything or see anything at all because of it so no way for me to tell. Since the laptop came with Windows 8 installed, I don't have a windows 8 CD to try and re install it either.

Good luck with the Toshiba, AUFred
Seem pretty durable to me.

My Mom had one that lasted just over 10 years, with XP.
She was on it a greater part of the day and the machine often had uptimes up to 3 months and once 6 months.
When the motherboard went bad, it still had the original factory instal on it.

I bought a Toshiba at the same time and passed it off last year to my sister for stand alone work. Still works as new.

Pretty durable machines, from what I've experienced.

That stinks. Hopefully sending it off will get you back up and running.

I own a Toshiba Netbook I have had a few years I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows 7 starter.
This new machine had an empty ram slot so I just added 4 more gigs of ram.

Does it have a recovery partition?
If so can probably find on line the correct key combo to access it.

With a new computer you should make a recovery disc as well as back up the recovery partition. If the hard drive dies you will need them.

Well with a brand spaken new laptop with nothing yet installed on it really, No point in making a backup if there is nothing to back up. if the hard drive fails, then it is up to the Company/Make of the laptop to fix it completely free or provide a brand new one which is what they are doing xD

I agree. If it is just a hard drive failure beyond the warranty period is what the discs are for. I did this new HP desktop that way and after using it 30 day did a backup on my stand alone drive. Do need to make copies of my email addys since mine were over a year old and I lost some folks.

I like to make my recovery discs while still new..for starting from scratch again... Then make an image from time to time to keep up with my new software and settings.

Sent from the toilet.
