Did Quentin Tarantino ever tell us what was in the case? One would have guessed drugs or perhaps even diamonds but when he opened it you could see a gold colour shining out. However, a decent amount of gold to get that kind of response would weigh a lot so it can't be solid gold. What do you think it was?

Not really. I read somewhere (cracked maybe) that in the original script it was full of diamonds. They decided to change it because it seemed cooler to leave it up to the audiences imagination. So the answer is just "whatever you think it is".

It's called a MacGuffin. It doesn't matter what's actually in there... the only thing that matters is that the characters care enough to keep the plot moving.
