Is that a smartphone or a phablet? I think the ultimate decision is if the device comfortably fits into all your pockets like a regular phone, otherwise we're talking tablets and phablets.

What is the rest of the phone like apart from a brilliant screen?

A phablet is what they have been nicknamed. Its as large as you can go and still put it in our front pants pocket.
The specs are not as hot as many phones this just has a dual core running 1.7 gh.
The audio is good...call quality is great. The phone is not heavy for its size. ... the screen will hold up in daylight much better than the flagship galaxy 4.
The screen is lcd rather than amoiled ...colors are accurate and contrast is good.
There is a 5.8 version out that doesnt have great reviews....but the 6.3 looks great...although the reviews inock it a little due to the screen resolution.
How high do you go?..Its dots per inch that determine how clear a screen will look...there is no pixelation here..and the fonts are great even zoomed.

So far so good I do miss the compactness of my old phone already in a way but this is much easier to type on.
The samsung launcher is loaded with features..its a nice phone

I have had the phone for about three months now so will do a quick review.
The phone is not perfect but is a rather good overall product.
The phone radio for calling is up on par with Motorola...this is a big plus.
The radio for mobile network...also very good
The radio for wifi...is not the best..but is average to good.
GPS radio...a touch weak..takes a while to gets its location..doesnt work very well indoors.
2 layers of shingles, plywood, about 8 inches of fiberglass insulation, drywall, heat cable, about three quarters of an inch of plaster between the phone and the sky...most phones work in here with gps..this phone is touch and go with gps indoors.
It does lock in while in the car however.
Audio...ringer is great and better than many.
Display is good and bright and does not blow at maximum brightness.
The mapping for auto brightness isnt the best as on many Samsung and is to dim for many indoor applications with low light conditions.
The power and volume buttons are to soft..causing a lot of accidental pressings.
The home button is a touch clunky when not pressed directly in the middle.
Charging port is on the bottom as it should be.
Head phones at the top as should be.
Led for the camera is good and bright..so you get a decent flashlight for a phone.
Music player...nice and easy..with the right options...but it sucks at finding album art and lyrics..the skin also looks outdated.
Browser is solid with navigation and options being spot on...also built in printing if you have a printer on your network.
Printing was very easy and I ran into no issues what so ever...Zero..it found the printer and simply worked..there was no setup on my end needed.
The gallery is pretty decent for a stock app...I stuck with it.
The file manager is also very decent for stock..with the ability to add shortcuts to folders within home of the file manger.
Blue tooth through the file manger also works without any issues.
The camera...while not the best takes a decent picture for a phone.
However I do not like that mode automatically reverts back to auto whenever the app is closed then opened later.
There is a little lag between taking the picture and the picture actually being taken.
Touch wiz launcher...some hate it some like it...I actually like it and use it for my launcher.
One press of home will take you to your last desktop rather than home desktop...which is how i like it..one more press will take it home.
The lock screen software is also good with a fair amount of options...but mainly it is easy to say open the phone by swiping the message icon and go straight to that message.
Also the curtain will also work if its locked making it very easy to go to the app that has an alert...or just flip the curtain back up and get back to it later.
The lock screen can be lit up by either the home or power button ,,,which is nice if you have the phone sitting on a desk as you can just poke the home button real fast.
Power management is pretty non existent and only offers "power saving"..which does nothing to control radio cycling intervals.
It can turn off haptic feed back lower screen brightness and turn down the cpu...all of which do nothing to increase standby time.
Not that standby times is terrible stock..about 3 days if the mobile data radio is on and several days without it.
You will need a third party app if you want to sync on a schedule rather than have the radio on full time...Green power free works great and the only one I found that truly works proper on Samsungs
tethering is blocked by us cellular with this phone..it will disconnect as soon as you connect,,you will have to root and freeze a little app I dont remember the name of it now...turning it off is greyed out.

The display is what this phone is all about...as with many Samsungs you get more screen for a stated size than with many other phones.
As the navigation soft keys and the home key are not included in the screen size...as many Samsung still use the hard home key.
This is not to say that all phones rob you on screen size that have all soft keys...but it is very common for these mfgs to include the soft keys in the screen size which can easily equate to a half inch for larger phones...so with this phone it is an honest 6.3 inches...border tablet.
The phone does not have alot of area that is not screen..the screen goes all the way where the curves in the corners start.
There is very little wasted space.
Battery life is good for pounding the net for about 8 hours.
This screen is LCD not amoled based.
What this means is that when its on..different{dark} colors and dark backgrounds do not have the same benefit as with amoled based screens.
But light colors is what kills the battery on Amoled based screens.
So in other words a white webpage may drain the battery 3 times faster on an amoled verses an lcd.
A dark webpage will drain the batter much slower on an amoled based screen.
The lcd wins IMO for overall use...unless we spend all our time texting and choose a dark theme.
In others words its like an Iphone in regard to screen and battery life.
So for me its better as I surf alot with the phone.
It fits in my front pocket
Has pretty decent hardware.
Pretty decent software.
Lots of screen which is LCD which is better for surfing the net.
I should mention the phone is dual core and not a quad core.
Unless you are a hard core gamer you will never know it though.
The browser is more responsive than is galaxy 4 for instance which is a quad .
If you are looking for a new phone I would highly recommend the mega 6.3 if you plan on using your smartphone for other than just talking on the phone
