So I was at one of my friends houses yesterday and he asked me to take a look at his computer. Everytime he tries to log into either facebook or yahoo it comes up with a no-connection screen when there is definately a connection. We tried it on his other computers and it works find so its not the site. I looked at his IE and all the settings where right. I disabled his norton and his windows firewall hell I tried everything I could think of (hes running xp media edition) even had a new user profile set up and the same problem occured. If you guys have any ideas feel free to let me know cause I am out of them.

Sounds like some sort of virus or spyware if you ask me...

Tell him to stay off the porn sites.

I have used every single program I own I put it all on a thumbdrive and went over there. Used combofix, hijackthis and of course Spybot and adaware and then used them in safe mode. His computer is cleaner then a babys bottom.

I have had friends that have all kinds of weird internet problems. Is he using IE? If so, have him try Firefox. I'll bet you all his problems go away.

If it were me, I'd download the program Active Ports some http logger to see where the call is being made and what port is making it.

Well Finally I just told him to re-download the new IE and that seemed to work. I still have no idea why it did it in the first place.

Still odd. If it were simply an IE problem, then why would Firefox not connect?

What was he doing just prior to problems? Was he doing any installations, maintenance or adjusting and system setting options?

IE still controls most if not all of your internet settings even if you are not using IE as your browser. IE on windows is much much more then just a browser.
