I'm trying to activate windows XP on a different computer. The problem is when I try to run the activation tool it wont load. I try to run msoobe.exe, which is what the activation points to, and it loads for a second (as seen in task manager) then goes away, which never takes me to the activation screen. I've tryed to run the program everyway imaginable with no luck. Anyone had a similar problem? Lemon, tim?

You first have to edit the registry
Begin by opening the Registry Editor and navigating to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click the ODBETimer binary value and select Modify. Change at least one character of this value to either a number from 0 to 9 or to a letter from A to F, then click OK and close the Registry Editor. This renders the current product key invalid and deactivates Windows.

Now, it’s time to reactivate Windows using your new product key. Click Start | Run and enter the command:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a

where %systemroot% is your Windows directory. In many cases, this command will look like:
C:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a ........Notice the switch a?
At this point, Windows will launch the Product Activation Wizard.

I've used this technique before with good results.

Tim, i'm not sure if this will work as it is already saying windows is not activated, so to unactivate it seems to be unnecessary. I've tryed to run msoobe.exe through the run command you posted. I will give it a try, but it will have to wait a couple weeks as I am at school now.

Thanks for your help

Be careful, if you have an unactivated copy of windows on your machine for too long (30 days I think) it might lock you out. It will just bounce you back and forth from the registration screen and the boot sequence. Even if you try to activate it, it won't. At this point, you have to format and reinstall.
