I thought they were debating or whether or not school districts should bus students based on race. Which is very different from segregation. Personally, while I think diversity in schools is important, I don't think kids should be bus 45 minutes across the county when there's a school a few miles from their house.

I heard they want to segreate schools, not just buses. even though school districts have the option to choose this or not....i think it shouldnt even be considered....and yes they are still debating it

School districts have to option to segregate or the option to send students to other schools to maintain a racial balance?

Do school districts have the option to say "Here's the black school, here's the white school" or do they have the option to keep each school racially balance (the school district is 60% white, 40% black so the schools should be too)?

Each school district has the option to choose if they go segregated or not....but they must have at least one intergrated school for students who don't believe in segreagtion can go to a nonsegregated school.

but isn't this just a step backwards in the fact that we are going back to doing something that we fought to get out of for so long?

The Supreme Court ruled on Brown v Board of Education saying that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" and reversed the earlier ruling of Cumming v Richmond County Board of Education, which sanctoned de jure (by law) segregation. We've been studying educational law in my Curriculum class and I have yet to hear that a schools district is allowed to have any segregated schools, even if an integrated school is offered.

I think I'm confused. Are you saying that school districts can now segregate if there's a integrated school or are you saying that the Supreme Court is ruling on the possibility of allowing it?

No worries. I was just wondering if that was the case where you live (because it would be illegal under the current law). I hadn't heard the details of what exactly they are ruling on.

I can't see any school districts actually doing this if it's passed. I can't see this actually passing. To me, having a diverse population in a class or school is important. Differently dialects, different languages, different cultures provide for a more enriching environment.

i totoally agree. but i think there's 2 school districts that they're testing it on...one in the south and one somewhere else i can't remember...there would be to many problems if they decided to pass it. if the school districts got the okay, it would be up to more of the parents...if over half of the parents want their kids to go to different schools than the other races...than they HAVE to pass it in that school district....in the south there are still areas that are very racist so those areas might actually be put into segration...but then the neighborhoods, jobs, and other things like that would have to change to because if a child is brought up in a segregated area, how will they know how to treat others that are of a different race?

I just read an article about this and the Supreme Court seems to ruling on whether race should be taken into consideration over other criteria when it comes to allowing students into schools of their choice.

That's not how I understand it but it could happen from the way I think they are talking about. The way I understand it is that if two children, one balck and one white, want to go to the same school, they wouldn't factor in race at all or have it count for less.

I was underthe impression that the new "segregation" talk was because politicians were trying to forcfully de-segregate the schools. Which would be a friggen travesty....but maybe Im wrong. I rarely read the whole thread befoer I Post lol......luv Ya
