When I was at college in the early 90s, the grunge and indie scenes were the big thing. While Nirvana and Pearl Jam were huge, the biggest group amonst students was Carter USM (Unstoppable Sex Machine). Went to see them when they reformed 8 years ago at a tiny but great club quarter of a mile up the road from me. The atmosphere and nostalga was amazing!

Their biggest attraction was their witty and great way of taking the piss out of the shit which was around in the incredibly poor music scene in the early 90s before bands like Oasis and Blur started charting and getting rock and roll mainstream again.

When they weirdly appeared on the Smash Hits awards (awards for shitty boy bands, basically ) they made the national news for attacking Phillip Schofield :24:

I've been at college on and off for years, but when I first started in 2003 it was mainly stuff like Evanesence, Mark Owen, The Libertines.....Space was also pretty popular, even then.
