Bleh, I had a feeling it was the guy who 'found' the tape that was behind it. I knew he wouldn't just find a tape lying in the desert.

No they didn't lie to you. I don't believe the first article ever said that the guy that found the tape was the one that raped the girl.

The tape was turned in to police by a man who said he found it in the desert.

So... it sounded to me like the guy who raped the girl was the one who found it in the desert.
