Pinhole Cameras

I get this website's monthly newsletters, and this artist was featured this month.

Look at all this pinhole cameras! They range from candy tins to trunks and suitcases.

Way cool.

His prints are "all day prints" so I guess he uses paper and then just fixes those - skips the developing.

I took a printmaking class in high school where we ended up making pinhole cameras (the teacher was getting ready for photography class the next year). Unfortunately, somebody exposed the paper we were supposed to use so none of it came out and we didn't have enough time to try again. But it was fun to do.

we were supposed ot make pin hole cameras at college. but our tutor went in the huff that day and told us we couldnt do it.

So all you do is place a photo sensitive paper inside some box with a small hole and that is it? Or do you have to develop it?

it depends on how long you expose the paper and the look you are going for and the type of paper, etc.

if it's an all day exposure or an exposure for several hours it would turn black if you develop it. So usually you just fix it.

but you can do very short exposure times and then develop the paper.

of course depending on the paper and the light you would need x amount of time, etc.


some paper - like warm toned paper - you can set in there all day and it might actually capture color!



I'm scared to do it because of all the complications, but if I get a chance to get back in the darkroom I am going to do one!

Even though this is done with a film camera, you can do this with a digital camera

Though if you have a spare digital slr like me, it is adviceable to use the spare one

Lol...who was that?! I vaguely remember being told to make them but I dont know if we ever did...I got a kit once that was supposed to be pinhole but it was just crap...

it was Simone. cant remember if you were in our class that point. but she has a complete break down cos no one had a done an assignment, that she hadn't actually told us was due in. then she cried when she couldn't find a paper clip and told us we weren't going to make a pinhole camera cos we didn't deserve the privileged.
