The memorial service for Cpl. Chris Sitton was not disrupted by seven demonstrators, two of them children, from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The group sang hymns and carried placards on a street corner across from the Montrose High School gym where the service was held Sunday afternoon.
More than 100 people, many members of the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle group, blocked the demonstrators from the view of mourners with large American flags and drowned out their singing by loudly repeating the Pledge of Allegiance over and over again.
As the demonstrators dispersed, Patriot Guard leader Wayne “Grumpy” Hemmert smiled and said, “Mission accomplished.”
Montrose Police Cpl. Gene Lillard watched as the demonstrators went to their car. He said virtually every member of the force volunteered to come to the funeral to protect the Sitton family.
Last week, the Westboro Baptist Church faxed a flier to news media stating that members would picket Sitton’s funeral. In a telephone interview last week, Shirley Phelps-Roper, who said she was the church attorney, said members picket at soldiers’ funerals because the Iraq war is God’s wrath on America for being lenient with homosexuals.
“God hates fags, God hates fag enablers and God hates America,” she said.
“Only two kinds of people inhabit America, either some practicing pervert, or if not directly engaged in some covetous activity like adultery, they are divorced.”
The flier reflected more of the church’s message of hate.
“Thank God for IEDs,” it reads in part. “God himself has now become America’s terrorist, killing and maiming American troops in strange lands for fag sins.”
As the church group was leaving, the driver of their mini-van, Rebecca Phelps-Davis, said they were spreading the word that God is causing the deaths in Iraq to punish an immoral nation.
When asked if they believed in a God of hate rather than love, another member of the group, Sarah Phelps, gave this response:
“How can you know the love of God if you don’t know the hatred of God?”

You have your beliefs, Great, opinions, thoughts, Thats Great.. But at the Funeral for a Soldier. Thats pretty damn low. Don't like it, think what you want, There are places and times to have your Demonstration.. Go picket a Military Base. But not the Funeral, It's not enough that this man Died, and people are Grieving???
And lets not forget, He died as a soldier, Who; believe in the war or not, He became a soldier bcse he believed in what he was doing, and one of those things Was protecting the rights of those mmm ( add explitive here ) so they Could Protest without Fear,
“Only two kinds of people inhabit America, either some practicing pervert, or if not directly engaged in some covetous activity like adultery, they are divorced.” ( I wonder group they consider themselves,)
