First, Let me Say It is Arrogant, Simple minded people like this that Absolutly PISS ME OFF.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The memorial service for Cpl. Chris Sitton was not disrupted by seven demonstrators, two of them children, from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The group sang hymns and carried placards on a street corner across from the Montrose High School gym where the service was held Sunday afternoon.

More than 100 people, many members of the Patriot Guard Riders motorcycle group, blocked the demonstrators from the view of mourners with large American flags and drowned out their singing by loudly repeating the Pledge of Allegiance over and over again.

As the demonstrators dispersed, Patriot Guard leader Wayne “Grumpy” Hemmert smiled and said, “Mission accomplished.”

Montrose Police Cpl. Gene Lillard watched as the demonstrators went to their car. He said virtually every member of the force volunteered to come to the funeral to protect the Sitton family.

Last week, the Westboro Baptist Church faxed a flier to news media stating that members would picket Sitton’s funeral. In a telephone interview last week, Shirley Phelps-Roper, who said she was the church attorney, said members picket at soldiers’ funerals because the Iraq war is God’s wrath on America for being lenient with homosexuals.

“God hates fags, God hates fag enablers and God hates America,” she said.

“Only two kinds of people inhabit America, either some practicing pervert, or if not directly engaged in some covetous activity like adultery, they are divorced.”

The flier reflected more of the church’s message of hate.

“Thank God for IEDs,” it reads in part. “God himself has now become America’s terrorist, killing and maiming American troops in strange lands for fag sins.”

As the church group was leaving, the driver of their mini-van, Rebecca Phelps-Davis, said they were spreading the word that God is causing the deaths in Iraq to punish an immoral nation.

When asked if they believed in a God of hate rather than love, another member of the group, Sarah Phelps, gave this response:

“How can you know the love of God if you don’t know the hatred of God?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have your beliefs, Great, opinions, thoughts, Thats Great.. But at the Funeral for a Soldier. Thats pretty damn low. Don't like it, think what you want, There are places and times to have your Demonstration.. Go picket a Military Base. But not the Funeral, It's not enough that this man Died, and people are Grieving???

And lets not forget, He died as a soldier, Who; believe in the war or not, He became a soldier bcse he believed in what he was doing, and one of those things Was protecting the rights of those mmm ( add explitive here ) so they Could Protest without Fear,

“Only two kinds of people inhabit America, either some practicing pervert, or if not directly engaged in some covetous activity like adultery, they are divorced.” ( I wonder group they consider themselves,)

I seriously don't know what has come over the Baptists lately. My grandparents on my dad's side were Baptists and they never had anything adverse to say about anyone else. Those people disgust me.

Westboro Baptist church... They are a bunch of idiots. They are not Baptists, they should not be called baptists, more like ass holes.

Baptists do not teach hatred, unlike these ass clowns.

But I have to say that I am glad that they do have the freedom to do what they do. The fact that the government does not stop them or silence them, shows we are a free nation.
I am also very glad that the bikers stepped up and blocked them from the services. As much as I respect the bikers for keeping it nonviolent, I wouldn't have minded a little ass-whopping in this case. :)

This stuff pisses me off, on so many levels. Especially because of Leland and what he went through with his mom... things like this just make it that much worse. There is no reason for it, none at all.

I'm glad you guys are a free country and all, but messages of hate? I'm not sure how I feel about that.

That is the price we pay for being "free". Freedom is acknowledging a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

I think picketing a funeral is one of the lowest things...especially cause in a lot of these cases the people picketing bring their children to help.

Hooray for the bikers...and the NON-VIOLENT honor guard they set up. I think they're awsome...especially cause of how far they travel sometimes just to make it to the funeral they plan on guarding.

Yeah we're a free country but havent we learned a little thing called respect?

Do you have a link for that article? I'd be curious to see who printed it and when it happened.

There are unkind people in every walk of life, in every religion, in every belief, in every neighborhood. That behavior described in your article is more about personality than belief or religion. If we begin to stereotype certain belief systems or religions based on the actions of cruel people who claim an affiliation with them, then we are no better then them. That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

Here is the Link Peppermint

picketing the wrong place

It does not say much about the group, beyond what I have wrote,

I understand what you mean, But these people Travelled from Kansas to Colorado to protest, it is not about a few locals. The Church attorney supports what they do.

Thank you for that link.

Westboro Baptist Church is associated with Fred Phelps who is a nutcase. My point in the other post was to state that people shouldn't assume that because Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps are cruel and thoughtless, that all the rest of the Baptists or every other Christian would behave the same way. Imho Fred Phelps isn't acting on behalf of Christianity. He's acting on his own behalf. It's the same with the terrorists and Muslims. Not every Muslim is going to tie a bomb to their kids chest and send them into a mall to blow it up.

I don't know much about Westboro Baptist church, or Fred Phelps,

But I agree in the thought, you are putting across.

Unfortunatly opinions and thoughts such as thiers are taught more often then we realize, The problem with any Church or Organized religion, Is They are only as good as their Teacher. Church's should be taught by a general understanding and Belief, But many stray from that and Teach their own personnel beliefs, And Usually those who do so, Have the Charamatic ability to convince many people of many things. I think History alone has shown us that one powerful man can bring destruction to many ( Manson, Johansburg, Waco)

And though for all the bad teachers out there, There are many good Teachers, But sadly they are not the one's that make front page stories, so they are also not the one's people remember.

I can pretty much say without a doubt that I hate Fred Phelps. Matthew Shepard? Fred Phelps insists that his death was JUSTIFIED, just because the kid was gay. There are very few people that I will actually utter "I hate..." and Fred Phelps is one of them. He hates me already and he's never met me. Fred Phelps is low, low, low.

Have you seen his schedule? He's picketing today (twice), and tomorrow. At funerals for all three.
