What are your thoughts on this? Do you practice it?

I do. I accept full responsibility for my actions and thoughts. I also accept the consequences of those. If do something wrong, like call someone here a name, I don't try to justify it by saying they deserved it and get angry if I get an infraction. I committed the crime, so to speak, so I must do the time. Why would you get upset if you knew what you did was wrong and had to face the consequences of that?

I must say it's probably one of my biggest pet peeves when people blame others for their circumstances, feelings, etc.

Karma is a bitch people... deal with it. :cool

what you're saying is mostly something I can agree with. We should all claim responsibility for our actions.

However, I start to disagree massively when you say your biggest pet peeve is people who blame others for their circumstances, which is entirely different from the actions and thoughts you spoke of before that.

No one on this planet is 100% responsible for their circumstances, it's simply an impossibility. There is much in this life that we have no control over, and that needs to be taken into account.

Taking your reasoning to it's logical conclusion would mean the poor Haitians would be responsible for their plight right now. Can you justify that please?

Certainly I agree. If I make a mistake in life I don't blame anyone else for it, it was my error. You have to be mature enough to deal with the fact that at some point in life, you will make an error.

I'm not talking about those kind of circumstances. I'm talking about things that are in your control. Like for instance when people complain about getting a speeding ticket. Obviously you were speeding, so getting a ticket would be a direct consequence of that. The cop is doing his job. Why would you get mad at them for just doing their job? You were the one in the wrong by speeding. My take is... don't blame the cop... accept responsibility that you were the one speeding and getting a ticket is simply the consequence of that.

well then as I said, I totally agree with that. Thanks for clarifying :)

No way, it's not my fault... The Man is holding me down!

We all should be willing to take responsibility for our actions.. It bugs me too when people use the above response or something like it.

i'd maybe change this to we should want to take responsibility for our actions. to do so is to be mature and what it means to be an adult IMO. being an adult isnt just doing whatever you want, it's also accepting the consequences for what you do as an adult, otherwise you're just a child as that is what children do. "but billy started it!" doesnt fly with me from an adult.

it's also the "they made me" statements people make. no, you made yourself do it and you're using them as an excuse for what you did. you are in control of you and how you react, they are not.

sadly there are a lot of adults out there who do these things, blame other people, make excuses for what they do or just flat out feel that there should be no consequences for what they do.

it seems like self responsibility is becoming a thing of the past. or is it just me?

In terms of social interaction, crime (yes I have speeding tickets!) and responsibilities in life, I always take care of my own and expect no one else to take responsibility there. I'm responsible for my own actions 100%.

I think the issue get's blurrier in terms of taking responsibility for what you say and, sometimes, how you act in your personal life. We're human and we all make mistakes and, for me, I'm guilty of being extremely defensive when it comes to accountability for how I make others feel.

Yes. I live with my decisions knowing full well the consequences. I won't pass blame on anyone.

I'm a free spirit. I make choices for myself. The ones I control of course.

If my choice brings me down it's only me that I can fault.
If my choice brings me up..... then I'm my own heroine.

not only must we be mature enough to take responsibility for our errors, it is imperative we are able to recognise the effect our actions have on others, whether these people are known to us or not, for every action threr is reaction we must think before we act

if we did more thinkng we would be a nicer bunch

:nod::nod::clap:nod::nod:

I live by it, I argue for it, and I teach it to my students.

People should accept responsibility for their decisions and actions, and should be allowed to experience the consequences of those actions (with very few, life-threatening exceptions). That goes for the positive as well as the negative. Too often we take from those who made good decisions and give to those who made bad ones. It harms society and makes us weak and spoiled.
