May 18, 2006 Notice of Boil Water Advisory for Blue Mountain

High levels of turbidity were detected in the Pennsylvania American Water Blue Mountain water supply.

Customers are asked to boil their drinking water until further notice.

Este informe contiene información muy importante sobre su agua de beber. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien. Hiervan el agua antes de usarla. Para más información: (800) 565-7292.

Pennsylvania American Water routinely monitors water supplies for turbidity (cloudiness). A water sample taken May 18 showed a turbidity level of 2 turbidity units (NTU). This is above the standard of 1 NTU. Because of these high levels of turbidity, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms.

This notice applies to the following customers: Wind Gap Borough, Pen Argyl, Plainfield Township, Nazareth Borough, Bushkill Township, Stockertown Borough, Patamy Borough, Palmer Township, Upper Nazareth Township, Forks Township and part of Ross Township.

Turbidity has no health effects. However, turbidity can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. Those at risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.

While symptoms may not be caused by organisms in the drinking water, if you experience any of these short-term effects and they persist, you may wish to consult your doctor.

CUSTOMERS ARE ASKED TO BOIL THEIR WATER BEFORE CONSUMPTION. Until further notice, all customers in the affected area are asked to bring water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food to a full boil for a minimum of one minute, then cool before use, or use bottled water. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. Pennsylvania American Water also recommends the following steps:

Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water;
Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;
Do not swallow water while you are showering or bathing;
Provide pets with boiled water after cooling;
Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms;
Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
Pennsylvania American Water will be stationing water tankers at the following locations. Customers are asked to supply their own containers.

Pennsylvania American Water Pen Argyl water treatment facility, located at the intersection of North Robinson and Reservoir Avenues by midnight
Wind Gap Fire Company parking lot on N. Broadway by 2 a.m.
Pennsylvania American Water warehouse, located 31 Willowdale Avenue by 2 a.m.
Stockertown Borough municipal building parking lot, located on Main Street by 2 a.m.
High turbidity occurred as a result of a mechanical failure of an automated valve at the water treatment plant.

Corrective actions taken by Pennsylvania American Water include isolating the affected valve. In addition, the company will be increasing its bacteria sampling. Pennsylvania American Water anticipates lifting the boil advisory within 48 hours, pending water quality test results.

For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water's customer service center at (800) 565-7292. Additional information can also be obtained by calling the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
