Barron Hilton, Hotel Magnate, to Leave $2.3 Billion to Charity

LOS ANGELES — Hotel magnate Barron Hilton will give $2.3 billion, the bulk of his fortune, to charity, officials said Wednesday.

Hilton, the 80-year-old grandfather of Paris Hilton, bequeathed the money to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, a charity founded by his father in 1944.

"We are all exceedingly proud and grateful for this extraordinary commitment," Hilton's son Steven M. Hilton, president and chief executive of the foundation, said in a statement.

"Working to alleviate human suffering around the globe, regardless of race, religion or geography, is the mandate of the foundation set by my grandfather ... and now reinforced by my father."

The funds will partly come from the sale of the Hilton Hotels Corp. to The Blackstone Group.

The money will go into a trust but eventually will find its way to the foundation. Hilton, the chairman of the foundation, pledged an immediate $1.2-billion donation to the charity, with an estimated $1.1 billion to follow after his death.

Hilton had indicated at a recent board meeting that he would follow in his father's footstep by leaving nearly all of his fortune to the trust when he died in 1979.

The charity has distributed more than $560 million for programs that house mentally ill homeless people, prevent substance abuse and increase access to safe water in Africa and Mexico. A significant portion of the money helps the work of Catholic Sisters

Well it's a magnanimous gesture no doubt, and one to be commended. If I read that article correctly he's following the example set by his grandfather. And it didn't stop his family from accumulating their fortunes so I doubt very much it will affect Paris's fortune and/or that of her parents. Those guys are pretty well set as it is.

Fact is, she is rich now off her own money, and will continue to live that way. Whether we like it or not. She can always sell something using her name. Her name is worth millions alone.

I don't hate her at all, I'm just looking at how she's wasting her life away. What I'm getting at is the lifestyle that she's living right now costs 10's of thousands of dollars a day. She may get well compensated for opening a new club or whatever, but even the queen of night-vision will get bored doing that. Her acting is piss-poor, so that'll wash up as soon as she loses that cute figure. You can only produce so much perfume...unless you're ELizabeth Taylor appearantly.

Money-trees die unless you have something to water them with...something sellable...she's losing her sell-ability already in the states, which is why she's constantly going overseas. She's still "New" to some places. And as with all people that are "famous for being famous" she'll have to settle for a semi-obscure lifestyle, showing up every now and again...maybe on a Discovery Channel documentary?????

She started off being famous for being rich, now she's just as I said, famous for being famous...there are several other spoiled rich girls that are famous for being rich, but no one's exploited it quite as well as Paris has.

I'm not sure why you think I hate her, I have no hate in my heart for her. I think she's an attention whore, but when everything is just given to you, you sometimes feel the need to make yourself stand out.

I think you're typing faster than you're thinking: I do think she needs to make money to maintain her status...she's not an "A" list celebrity. That title is more reserved for the likes of Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Steven Speilberg and the like. I think she's very popular and can be very charismatic...it's too bad she didn't actually use her money, or her daddy's money, and get herself an education. Not so much for the degree itself, but for removing her ignorant stigmata.
