over qualified

I withdrew from my studies last year due to the fact it was way too exhausting, I was over commited to studying that i missed out on the smaller things, like time with my kids etc.

I finally realised after talking to a uni councellor that i was over qualifying myself for what it was i actually wanted to do.

Soooooo i re enrolled few days ago. Bachelor of human services with a majour in child and family, end of 6 years job placement at a drop in centre, detention centre or as a councellor at a school or youth centre.
LOL bingo took me long enough to get to it.

Long story short....

I wanted to know have you ever over qualified yourself for something but didnt realise until it was too late?

yes, I applied for a job at a loan center for data processing and they said since I worked on a bank level, that this work would seem tedious and boring, I said I didn't mind it....then the interviewer said, the salary would be too low once again I did not object, finally he came out and said it, sorry, you are just overqualified for what we could offer you.

Yup, I did. I was trained and certified as a heart and lung transplant/bypass Surgical Nurse at a well known University in Chicago and had a 12 year experience on top of it. ( I graduated with Bachelors 1.5 years advanced so I was very young when I started working as a nurse) When we moved to a smaller suburb and applied at a nearby community hospital- I was told the same thing PJbleek was told. That I was over-qualified and the salary they can offer was too low for the experience and training i had. I told them, I didn't mind. BUT the answer was still a Big NO :eek :(

Who is to say you are overqualified? What if somebody is out of work and can't find a job and is willing to take a cut in pay and position? That's just nonsense.
the employer will probably think you would get bored and high tail it out. they want a commitment from you and plus it could be any reason they deem you to be overqualified, so you really can't question this (unless you really want to be a pushy SOB) it's the employers decision....

I know it doesn't make sense BUt nowadays especially if companies can hire new grads with no experience and can pay them a lower salary that's what they go for, unfortunately :(

The overqualified bit/excuse had happened to a lot of my friends esp the IT/computer programmers who received pink slips. Wanting to start a new job. A lower position job even with pay cut. Still "overqualified"

I was going to go for a Doctorate in Management at one point, but it was pointed out to me that I would be drastically reducing my available options if I did that.

Dr. Sam; PhD would sound good, but unless I wanted to teach there would have been no place for me. So, I went to Law School instead... and lasted a year before realizing if I stuck to it I'd be doing that crap for the next 40 years and wind up eating the muzzle of a rifle.

Sometimes, too much education is a bad thing. Congratz on pulling the plug at the right time. :)

I am bored as heck at my job and did try to go back to school, but then my uncle fell ill w/cancer and I was running back and forth 300 plus miles every other weekend, working full time and trying to keep up on my studies.....'couldn't do it. Sometimes I regret it but man one can sometimes only do so much and I too wanted to see my hubby....

I also got two speeding tickets two weeks in a row for 110 mph, so my hubby was mighty displeased and it was mighty expensive to go to court. Thank God for governors or I don't know how much they would have clocked me for ;)

That was my thing i was feeling great people would call me Dr Kate lol i would make people call me it BUT in the long run what was the point of having the doctorite when there wasnt a lot i could do with it, i mean the only real way would have been to open my own practice and it was a far off dream.,
i feel much better about the decision i made though which it the upside :)
