I wouldn't mind an opt out system because I know so many people who say they'd happily donate their organs but don't register for it or their famillies would overrule it.

I think if it would increase transplants then it is a good idea. So many people could be saved from death and I think that is important. And at the end of the day, if people were really against it for Religious or personal reasons, they can just opt out.

I'm all for this. If you really, really want to hang on to your organs after you're dead then you should have to make that stipulation before you die.

Otherwise, every dead body should be harvested for spares for the benefit of those still alive.

Actually, thinking about it, I don't think you should be able to opt out of this at all. You should have no choice - you're dead for Christ's sake, you can't vote, you can't pay tax, you have no say in the matter. Your body becomes the property of the society it leaves behind.

I guess I'm confused as to why they're calling it opt out when your opting to donate? Wouldn't that be opting in? you backwards English and your silly terms.

No.

You already have an "Opt In" system. It's that thing you do with your drivers license maybe.

what the proposition is, is that if you DON'T want your organs donated, you must specify, otherwise they will. So the system is an opt-out system because you're opted in by default.

Well they have tests for that and don't use it. It's like when you donate blood, they test it to make sure it is safe to use.

And even if a person is healthy, their organs might not be used becuase the organs have to match the person who needs the transplant otherwise the body rejects it.

Hell even if they do match the organs perfectly, sometimes the person's body rejects the organ.

Over where? Over here?
What backwards country do you think we're from?

You want a discussion on the quality of healthcare of our prospective countries - fine by me.

I'm torn. I can see the upside to doing it reverse of what we have, and I get that you're dead, you have no use for your organs (which is why I have the little heart on both my license and military ID), but the thought of someone rifling through my body for "spare parts" is hard to get my mind around.

maybe think of it more as saving lives?

I was going overboard but honestly I think you should have the choice. It's your body,

I'm sure some people who opt out, are afraid of premature organ harvesting. ;)

BTW, all polls need an undecided choice!!

People, in my experience would do it, but are just too damn lazy to register. I would prefer to have people have to get off their butts to register opting out than opting in

I completely agree with the OP. I don't actually think there SHOULD be a choice in whether you donate or not. It should be compulsory. I mean, come on really? You're dead for crying out loud.

For me, it's a great feeling, knowing that when I'm gone, my organs will prolong or save someone's life. Doesn't everyone want to feel that way?

I have heard people say that on other forums where this has been debated.

I saw a good documentry on organ donation a while ago. It was exploring the idea that memories aren't stored in the brain but all over the body in the cells. And they used examples of people (mainly in America) who have had organ donations (and never met or had contact with the organ donor) and then got the donor's memories or the person's personality started to change to that of the donors.
