Anyone use this suite of programs? It's a free Word Processing suite like MS Office but it's open source and put out by Sun.

I have it, but I haven't needed to use it yet. I also have Microsoft Office, but figured I'd try out the OpenOffice but just haven't really tried it out lol.

I've actually used it to fix some corrupted excel spreadsheets. Open them in OO and save them as .xls, and you can then open them again in MS Excel. So it's come in handy a few times. Also for some friends of mine that don't have office but I am continually mailing spreadsheets to, I've gotten them hooked up to it.

The only thing I don't like about it is that I do a lot of VBA coding for macros, and it's sort of sticky on that feature. But for the price, I think I do without. :)

I actually use Open Office a LOT on my laptop - I have Linux on it and I use it for school (mostly for my written assignments because of my writing disability), and it comes in handy. It has got its own redeeming qualities, but I find waiting five minutes for it to start up on my desktop is just too long to bother with it unless I'm doing something for school, in which case I would just take out my laptop and have it on and typing whatever around the same time the Open Office window would be open and still loading on the desktop. :/

I had it a while ago. I did a paper on it, saved it to a pen drive, and took it to school to finish. My school only had MS Office '03. When I opened my paper it removed all my margins, all my tabs, and it was no longer double spaced. It wasn't too hard to fix, it was just really annoying.

That's probably because you saved it in the ODT format or whatever it uses probably - there's an option to save it in a compatible format with Microsoft Office. I've done something similar to that myself a few times and I wanted to slap myself. :/
