Only my 5th graders would say such things

I love working with kids. But they say the most random things. One girl today asked me if I had an eating disorder because I'm so skinny. She then decided I weigh 95 lbs, which I told her was not far off but that she needed to go back to work. She proclaimed that I was awkward and went back to work. Then her and another girl asked me about my husband (they know he's in Iraq). One of them asked if he had killed anyone yet. I told them no, that he fixes weather equipment. She responded with "Well, what is he good for if he's not killing people?" I wasn't sure how to answer that but she had moved on to other topics (like how I'm weird for watching the History Channel for fun). And they wonder why I always have to tell them to be quiet.

I would think that's a reflection of their home life, things their parents and other relatives say, things they hear from their friends and their friends' parents, and also if they watch news opinion programs, stupid TV reality programs and go on the internet.
Alot of influences that they're hopefully still sorting out........

If find it interesting to hear because it does give insight to their lives and thought processes. And it reminds me how much has changed since I was 10.

haha thats kinda cute. Unlike a 50-60 year old telling you you're skinny and the wind might blow you away... like what happens to me.

lol

Oh, I get that too. The girl who I was talking to I've known for three or four years so it wasn't a big deal. But I do get tired of the teachers telling me how lucky I am to be so skinny.

Really? many blame technology for kids getting dumber. hand held calculators, computers where you can look up research information, computer games, console games, etc. Back in the day when kids had to walk uphill both ways in the snow barefoot... they were smarter and tougher! Today kids are all on ritalin and are either getting bored, then in trouble, or they're dumbing themselves down by playing video games all the time.

At least that's the nonsense that I hear, and don't believe. lol

so giving the young kids video games, appropriate for their age, is bad for them?

heh, thats not what i would say about my nephew. that fucker is smart. he learns confidence as well as morals from playing packman world 2, on both the playstation 2 and gamecube(the gamecube is at his house, its my playstation 2). he knows which game charaters are bad, and which are good.

its also teaching him eye-hand coordination.

========

however, yes, all of these things can be taught to a young one without games. look at me.. ok, well maybe not me, but others..

They're smart, just in different ways. They don't have much more knowledge of technology than I do but we all have more knowledge that my directing teacher. I think it's bad that they first learn with the technology instead of learning why it's the way it is using the old fashion way.

And Peter, I really don't mind that much. I find it more funny than anything else.

exactly, everything in moderation. My kids will not grow up with computers in their bedrooms. Because I know when I was a kid I was on the computer 24/7 if I could be. I just couldn't get enough.

Actually, ritalin helps you. It calms you down to be able to do the work. I'm on a stronger form of it. And technology can help people become much smarter, depending on how you use it. :)

I used to be on ritalin because the stupid doctors wrongly diagnosed me as having ADHD. I did find that if you take enough of it it gives you the same effect as speed!:D
