Okay not such a big deal really, but the backstory is I have always loved running. Never been too good at it, but loved it anyway.

So three years back I finally ran the Great North Run over here in the UK (a half marathon), but around a month before the run I got tendonitis in my achilles. I had to ease off the training and ended up doing a pretty disappointing time of just under two hours.

And the upshot was I really damaged them by doing that and I never really totally got back into running after that. It was mean to be the precursor to my running a marathon, which I likely will never be able to do as the harder I train the more chance my achilles have of breaking down again.

ANYWAY

And this is a totally ego stroking thread....

I RAN ONE HOUR FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY THREE YEARS JUST NOW!!

And I'm fucking buzzing. Sore. But buzzing.

And yes it was slow....likely only ran around 6 and a half miles.....but fuck I'm old so give me rep!!

I feel like I couldn't get in anyones "saddle" for a week now! :p

Well, John Wayne was a bad ass...or had a bad ass...either way, no one messed with him! :thumbup

Runners always impress me. I can run sprints like running the bases and that kind of thing...but distance running has forever eluded me. Mostly because I can't find a bra to properly holster the girls in place without knocking myself out...but I digress...and often.

Well done TD

That is not that shameful a pace. Not in my book

I think the best I did on a 10k was about 7:30 a minute pace. So at 6:30 pace that is very acceptable.

I ran a marathon back in 1976. I felt uncomfortable the entire race. The last 3 miles were absolutely brutal. I had gone out too fast trying to keep up with a hot babe that passed me at about the 6 mile mark. :D

Where did you run your marathon AA?

I'm hoping if I ever do it I'll be able to go for any of Barca, Amsterdam or Chicago. All three appeal. Maybe Boston

I ran the Detroit Marathon

It starts in Canada. Been so long I do not remember if we came back thru the tunnel or the bridge to the US. It is a flat easy course.

I had been running a couple of years and did it on a dare. I bought some books and followed the mileage they recommended building up to it.

I really wanted to run Boston but around that time the lowered the qualifying time. You have to qualify running in another marathon first and they lowered the time down from 3 1/2 hours. No way I could run a marathon in 3:10 which is what is was lowered to. I am not a natural runner.

Did you try stretching out the achilles like you do prevent shin splints??

You face a wall and are about 3' away from it. Keep your heels flat on the ground and place your hands on the wall and let your upper body fall towards the wall. well actually you do one at a time as better explained here. I would think that would stretch the achilles. You might talk to a dr. about this.

Interesting.

And yes I am okay (ish) with the achilles ordinarily. Basically, Alan Donald (South African fast bowler in Cricket) suffered with a similar deal and I follow the stretching he did....and man I hate stretching...but it's got to be done

Thanks so much for the info AA
