I thought about tacking this onto the end of a related thread, but I'm hoping we can shake off the emotions and try to start again calmly. Off the bat, I don't have a dog in this hunt. I am neither Jew or Palestinian. I see the situation in Gaza as the culmination of politicians making political decisions for political gain without thought of how it impacts actual human lives.

The latest bit in the news here is about an ancient crone speaking her bigoted mind and announcing her retirement (25 years late imo) because of the backlash. This column gives one writer's opinion. It's a decent read.

What he doesn't address is who was living in Israel before it was decreed to be Israel again. Here are a couple of timelines, just to further muddy things.

Who has the more legitimate claim to the land? Who is the more legitimate arbiter in such a situation? The UN has long abandoned any pretense of being unbiased. So has the US.

As I said before, If I were suddenly king of the world I'd apologize for fucking things up, build a fence to keep everyone out, and let the residents slug it out until they came to a decision.

The arguement about who was there first isn't particularly fair. Of course the jews were their first, they're over 2500 years old lol

The answer is they both have legitimate claim to the land. Of course their culture and history both lies in Israel. But, more importantly, it's where they and their children, and their children's children will be born and live.
