I turned my old laptop on for the first time in awhile today. I didn't have any issues with it. I did some stuff and then I went out for awhile and left it on. When I got home it was turned off. When I booted it back up it told me that it didn't recognize the battery. Now if I disconnect the adaptor it just turns off because it thinks there's no battery. Why? How do I fix it? :willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

How long was old laptop on shelf, was it in sleep more and was battery totally dead..

Take the battery out and put it back in.. Plug the laptop in the wall and leave it for a while ( till it recharged ) completely..

See if that help..

I dunno...a few weeks, a month maybe. It was turned off and unplugged and as far as I know the battery was fully charged the last time I used it. After I got that message I took the battery out and put it back in...several times. Maybe once or twice rather forcefully. :ninja It still tells me that it doesn't recognize the battery and won't be able to charge it. Will drop-kicking it help? :ninja

Nope drop kicking will not help.. :willy_nilly:

Don't force it in either.. :surrender

It should go in without a problem and the laptop should have no problems recognizing it..

Laptops drain batteries even if they are off and no doing anything.. One month might be enough to kill the battery, especially seeing this is not a new but older laptop..

Try to gently take the battery back out and placing it back in.. :)

I wasn't forcing it in. I was inserting it forcefully. There's a difference. :D

K, I turned the laptop off, took the battery out and put it back in. Now the light that tells me if it's charging is blinking alternating amber and green.

Btw, it's still flashing amber and green. Is it supposed to do that or does it mean it's still messed up? Normally when it's charging it's steady green.

*sigh*

My mom wanted my old laptop when I got a new one. I'd give it to her except it just has too many issues and she has no idea how to troubleshoot stuff. She's worse than me. :willy_nilly:

Nope, sounds right.. My last two laptops did that.. :)

When the battery is full it should go to solid green..

Speaking of quitting...the recharge light is still flashing and my laptop still won't recognize the battery. I'm not smart enough or patient enough to troubleshoot this. I guess that laptop doesn't have a battery anymore.

OK so here is what I think may have happened then..

The battery fell way below it's recharge level.. It may not want to accept a charge now..

You may ask BestBuy if they can recondition the battery for you.. Or even a local Computer store, if you bat your eyes nice :D

Other wise call Dell ( If I recall I think that's what it was ) and ask them if they had a recall on those batteries :D.. Worked for my brother..
