A "significant" earthquake shook the UK in the early hours of this morning, causing damage to buildings and leaving at least one person injured.

The tremor hit at around 1am and was measured at 5.2 on the Richter scale.

Its epicentre was near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, but the effects of the quake were felt throughout the country.

<A style="COLOR: #000000; TEXT-DECORATION: none" name=continueNews>As far away as Wales, Scotland and London, there were reports of residents being woken from their sleep by the tremor.

Watch Manager Mark Chadwick of Hanley Fire Station said they received a call to Carlton House, a Staffordshire University Hall of Residence, in Copeland Street, Stoke at about 1.10am due to the earth tremor which had happened a few minutes before.

He said: "A six foot chimney was partially down. We closed the road off and requested the aerial appliance from Longton."

He said initially there were about 100 students evacuated from the building but eventually only those from the top floor remained outside while firefighters made the chimney safe and dismantled some of the brickwork.

Watch Manager Chadwick said some damage had been caused to the roof of the building.

Fire crews remained at the scene for about three hours.

A spokesman for Hanley Police said the tremor had been felt in their building.

He said: "We only received a couple of calls about it."

A house was also damaged by the quake at Penkridge.

Hundreds of residents across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire felt the earthquake just before 1am this morning.

Dan Cooke, from Staffordshire, was walking home from a night out when he heard the rumble.

He said: "I thought there had been a demolition somewhere. It was very scary. I got in to find pictures had toppled over on the table.

"It lasted a good 10 seconds and noise was very loud. We've got a lot of old mining tunnels which run under the house and my mum was cared one of those had given in."

Iris Mellor, aged 70, felt the earthquake at her home in Leek Road, Abbey Hulton.

She said: "I was reading in bed and I felt the room actually shake. My bedside cabinet rattled. It was frightening."

And Wendy Degg, from Bentilee, said: "It was quite strong and made my bed and doors shake and rattle."

John Speed, crew manager at Crewe Fire Station, said he was surprised the crew were not called out following the earthquake.

He said: "We were sitting here and the place started shaking and we thought hang on a minute, is this an earthquake?

"We were expecting the bell to go but it didn't which was surprising. It lasted for about 10 to 15 seconds." The quake was recorded on equipment at Keele University. Click here to see the seismometer reading
