I know my latino boyfriend, who is incredibly easy going, seems to get slightly irritated when someone wears a giant sombrero as a joke or makes some sort of comment...once during a Tigers game the commentator said "Martinez is doing the salsa around the bases!" and he was like "bahhh".

I don't think it's racism...

It's stereotyping, a completely different thing. Just look at it this way, if you are a very large person, how would you feel if people made fun of it by wearing a big fat suit exaggerating the typical stereotypes? It's insensitive and people need to think.

So no one is allowed to wear a sombrero for a Halloween costume because another culture wears them? Hmm, we Americans better stop using chopsticks or the Chinese are going to think we are stereotyping them.

Insensitivity is one thing, blowing things out of proportion is kind of ridiculous.

What's getting dressed up as racial stereotypes got to do with halloween is my question? I thought the whole idea was for kids to get dressed up as ghosts and witches and zombies ect?

Oh Peter, Halloween is so far beyond this... People dress up as, gulp, the lady who can see Alaska from her backyard.

That kind of illustrates how people could potentially see a cultural Halloween costume as insensitive...we tend to wear costumes to mock the person or thing. Palin, the Jersey Shore people, etc...

It depends on the intention, for sure...I think that donkey and sombrero picture the guy held up on that site was super pushing the envelope.
